if you haven't been to the presidio, i think you should try and make that. if you're from out of town, it's a spectacular transition there. so, these golden gate national parks that i happen to be the superintendent of has now become after 40 years the second most visited national park in our country. we get 14 million people a year that come to our parks. it has spectacular coastline, includes muir wood, alcatraz, we get to tell the stories, stories about essentially what you and your predecessors did this this area. our headquarters, fort mason, was the fisherman's wharf area was the port of embarkation for the wars in the pacific. just this week we brought in a world war ii 16-inch bottle ship gun to the marine head lands to put it up at battery townsly which would have been the pinnacle of coastal artillery in world war ii. so, we now have a canon or artillery collection that spans in our park that spans from the civil war to the cold war, including a preserve 19-missile base. some of you also know that during the 1906 earthquake, the army assisted greatl

4's charles clifford has details on what happened and a closer look at the area. >> reporter: the presidioal trail, which is part of the much longer california coastal trail, stretches from ocean beach...along the coast... to the golden gate bridge. this is the northwestern edge of san francisco. over the past few years this trail has been improved as part of a larger effort to upgrade trails through out the presidio. but after heavy rains last november and december, maintenance crews noticed that a section of the trail... here... just north of baker beach..had become unstable. here's a picture of the damage. you can see cracks in the ground and the railing had become uneven for safety reason, the park service closed down the trail. they've since removed rocks and dirt from the site to prevent further damaged and also to figure out what was going on. the black plastic here is to keep water from saturating the unstable ground. in the meantime, warning signs and fences are keeping people out of the area. foot and bike traffic can go around this spot using lincoln boulevard. the national park

and the fourth grade we have partner the presidio y program. they come with vans and bikes and set up a bike skills rodeo on the yard and teach children how to wear their helmets safely and run through an obstacle course. and as you can see in almost every grade we reach about a thousand students. for the encouragement, this is the fun piece of safe routes to school. we have walk to school day which is the first october annually every year, and i believe most of you have participated this past year was at buena vista horace man. bike to school week is actually next week and we hope you are planning on attending. the highlight school will be groton in district 5. and -- but the main point of this program is to establish what we call walking school buses and bike trained. these are regular occurring events chaperoned by parents and caregivers to have children walking to and from school or biking to and from school on a regular basis. ideally we'd like to see it once a week. that's a little tough so we ask for once a month. and then of course we wa
