the s.w.a.t. team moved in surrounding the school thinking the gunman was inside. the injured woman from the cell phone video described to witnesses what happened in the classroom. >> he shot one person point-blank in the chest. and she turned out and ran. >> she said he wasn't all there. something wasn't right with him. from there, you know, i mean i guess -- i don't know, picking on him. i don't know. that's what she was telling us. >> she told me the person that was inside the classroom, the guy wasn't very, as you can say, popular, he was a korean guy, didn't know how to speak very good english, and he was kind of a, an outcast of the class. you can kind of tell. >> eventually police determined the gunman was not in the building. after an hour-long manhunt detained the suspect an hour from the scene. officers spent hours searching the school and rescuing students who had taken cover inside. witnesses say the shooting happened inside a nursing class which is one of the fields of study at this private school, students here are now in shock trying to fathom how th

the fluid situation. what can you tell us? >> good morning to you, laura, s.w.a.t. teams keep arriving, putting on their heavy gear, their helmets, taking out their high-powered weapons after people in the home barricaded themselves inside and claimed to officers they have firearms and they're refusing to cooperate. this is on cleveland avenue where there is a wide perimeter set up this morning. i'm stopping talking because i'm hearing some kind of popping sound, and i'm hearing dogs barking. but this started about 1:45 this morning with a 911 call, a man down on cleveland avenue, turns out he was stabbed. he was taken to valley medical center where he died. san jose police then tried to talk with the people in the home where the 911 calls came from in the first place. but the people in the house refused to cooperate with the investigators and said they had guns. that's when police called for backup. the s.w.a.t. team came out, they told people who live close by they might want to leave for safety. people did that very quickly. what the motive is they still don't know. an

the second sheriff deputy was not hit be he returned fire. s.w.a.t. teams moved in. again, at this point, investigators don't know if the gunman died in the fire. if heed before the fire breck out but at this point, they don't think he was realistically able to es-- to escape. >> what we need to do is determine who the suspect is, pick apart his life and try to determine a motive. you know, what happened that led up to this shooting and then from there, we need to honor and bury our deputy. >> reporter: now, the sheriff's deputy has been identified as 53-year-old robert paris. he's a 16-year veteran of the force. he's survived by his parents, and two children. the identity of the suspect, as you heard the suspect mention is still unclear. he's believed to have a military background. the sheriff would not identify him for us but he did say this suspect did have some sort of criminal record. he was arrested in 2000. but again, a briefing is supposed to take place sometime in the next hour. as soon as we get her -- more information, we'll bring it to you. >> thank you fo
