you can see this is the city of sacramento. some of the stationary -- stationery was produced here which would actually have images of the sacramento post office. this is a way for them to show their families but it looks like here. , noe is no telegraph television, no telephone, no internet. was the central place where they would have come . when they found out that mail would -- had arrived they would rush to get there and oftentimes waited days. some of these letters describe -- they say i am writing to you every day because i am not sure what letter will get back to you because the mail was not fixed at all. it is not until the railroad comes through in 1868 in 1869 that mail is really coming through on a regular basis. these letters, they are pouring out their hearts to their families, talking about how much they missed them. but they are also describing what california was like. how beautiful it is and how dangerous it is. sometimes they are saying things like don't let my brother come here, i know he wants to come. it is

today we are in the center for sacramento history. we hold the original records and we go from the beginning of the city all the way up to pleasant -- present time. i'm going to show you a sample of artifacts related to the gold rush here in the sacramento region. so, things like how we are connected to the goldfield and why sacramento was a destination. we often say they were the gateway to the goldfield. you had to come here off the river and then go on beyond and if you were coming across country, you would have come here to get your goods and supplies, even though you came over the mountains. getn times you had to settled first and kind of recuperate from your journey and then go back and start your mining. gold was discovered in january of 1848. original, had a land grant from the mexican government. he was the first person to settle in land in california and he had an expensive land grant that would have been thousands of acres. the first item is a painting that was done by a gentleman named taber, who was a sailor. he came here

we continue now with our look at the history of sacramento. >> the capital of california was not supposed to be in sacramento. a little farther down the road in san jose was were the first legislature met. they also met in vallejo and the nation which is close to san enoughco but still close to sacramento. when they first decided where to place the capital, they wanted it closer to an area people to get too quickly. sacramento had a lot going for it because of the gold rush in 1849 it brought a lot of people in. we have roads and a way to get here, the sacramento river. eventually, sacramento was chosen in 1854 to be the state capital. this building started in about 1860. it took about 14 years to complete, as is the case with a lot of state capitals throughout the country, the civil war era brought a lot of stops and starts. the capital in 1971 went through a distinctive seismic test, a two-year test, to see if the building would withstand an earthquake. there was a huge earthquake in the southern california area in 1971 that turned our attention to the fact that with modernization, floo

here we see the picture of three young men from the sacramento area. this is the picture they took before they were shipped out. all three of them were killed in action. they die for their country while their families were incarcerated. here we have one of our most rare items in the collection. bare loosely transitive means "1000 knots." threads aree red knots tied by a loved one or family member for this vest. this dates back to samurai times. theoretically, all of these knots would deflect the thrust of a samurai sword. family members created obi, or a belt. but this one was a vest. he decided to keep it. most other recipients of these through them away. they did it because you can see, it is very japanese-looking. here is japanese couple of -- calligraphy. on the back, we have this lovely painted tiger and more calligraphy. relates to the reparation and redress of the japanese-americans incarcerated during world war ii. during the carter administration, a commission on the wartime relocation and internment of civilians was warmth. as a result of thei

the capital of california was not supposed to be in sacramento. actually, a little farther down the road in san jose was with the first the legislature met. itia,hey met also in ben which is close to san francisco. when they first decided to place the capital, they wanted it close to an area that people could get too quickly. sacramento had a lot going for it because of the gold rush. so we had roads and a way to get here, the sacramento river. eventually, sacramento was chosen in 1854 to be the state capital, and construction on this building started in about 1860. it took about 14 years to complete, as is the case with a lot of state capitals throughout the country. the civil war era brought a lot of stops and starts. the capital in 1971 went through a distinctive seismic test to see if this building would stand enough quake. inre was a huge earthquake the southern california area and 1971 that turned our attention to the fact that with modernization and floors and try to make this victorian building look modern, they decided to go ahead and see
