joining me now is the mayor of smyrna, joanne masten. mayor masten, thanks for joining us here and our condolences to the community this evening. tell us the impact on the community when something like this happened. >> smyrna, even though it's a very small town. this has took the community by surprise. certainly the prison's been here for a long time and we hear relatively nothing about it. i'm amazed -- i guess not amazed -- of the out pouring of support for sergeant floyd and his family. a number of people have reached out to me about getting a vigil planned, about what we can do for the family. and just as a correction, there's one vigil here in smyrna tomorrow night at 6:00, the other is in dover at 6:30 at legislative hall. >> two events already planned to try to help the community grapple with this, heal and learn from it as well. >> it's been very shocking. and i can only speak on behalf of the folks i've contacted, but on behalf of the town of smyrna their thoughts and prayers are with the family as well as the other officers tha

the overthrow in power happened around 10:30 at vaughn corrections center in smyrna, delaware. four staffers were held hostage. two of them released yesterday. right now, two prison officers do remain as hostages. guards are in the process of moving inmates to other parts of the facility. nbc10's matt delucia is live with what is happening outside the prison. give us an update. >> reporter: vai and tracy, this has been going on for several hours. a little still going on at the facility behind me. we're in the parking lot of the administration area. we're not where the facility is and that building "c" where this hostage situation has been going on. we're about 200 yards or so away from it. but within the last half hour, we do see some activity from far away, where we do see vans moving around that area. again, a lot of information is pretty scarce at this moment. of course, they're trying to keep a lot of their tactics close to the vest, as they try to get these two officers out safely. take a look at some video that we shot within the last hour where you can see a little closer

the negotiations began around 10:30 at smyrna, delaware. nbc10's matt delucia joins us live from the facility. what's happening now? >> reporter: well, we're a little ways away from the building where this is going on. i'm going to pull up my ipad and try to give you a view of where you are. you see that blue dot, that's where we are. over here is where the correction facility is. skyforce 10 was over this area where you could see inmates being released. overnight, the latest update, 14 additional inmates were released and moved from building "c." again, that's where the standoff is happening. they were moved out but 82 inmates are still in that building at this hour. of course, from this view, you can see this began -- or quite a while yesterday, just after 10:30 yesterday morning. four members of the corrections staff were taken hostage. and through family members, inmates made their demands known to a delaware newspaper. among their concerns. their treatment at the facility and access to rehabilitation. two of the four officers were relea

this is all happening at the james t vaughn correctional center in smyrna, delaware. facility houses approximately 2 fox 5 tisha lewis joins us via skype with the latest. >> reporter: we are actually driving right now to the prison, we're about 30 miles or 30 minutes or so away, and as you mentioned there's a lot of developments kind of happening right now. let's kind of go through a timeline of when this unfolded. it was around 10:30 this morning, a call came in reporting a disturbance, the incident essentially five people including four security guards and also we're told a counselor are being held hostage by the inmates, there are about 120 to 150. now one of the hostages, at least in last hour or so, was released and that hostage is now getting some medical treatment for nonlife-threatening injuries at a nearby hospital. all of this again is happening at the smyrna prison, but prisons and facilities and

the james t. vaughn corrections facility in smyrna, delaware. we're on scene as well. nbc10's katy zachry has more on the call to the inmates. we begin with nbc10's matt delucia with details about what's going on now, matt? >> reporter: tracy and vai, we're about 19 hours into this hostage standoff. what i can tell you, it's a little dark from our vantage point and we're a little far away. i'm going to show you a map of where we are down at the administration building. you can see the entire complex of the vaughn corrections facility where that building "c" is. and that's where all of the attention is focused at this hour. so, again, it is a little ways from where we are, but we have seen some activity just within the past few hours. take a look at some video, a little closer from the vantage point, but still quite a ways away. you also see light information the air. could have been a helicopter or perhaps some other equipment that they were using to try to aid in this search and to try to get these two officers rescued and out of that facility. but again, a lot is goin
