the gulf of mexico. i am seeing a formed tropical system. as of 5:00, the hurricane center says it was not organized enough to become a tropical storm. though that should happen quickly. we told you about this hurricane watch. a watch means you could feel hurricane-force gusts within 48 hours. and some of that has been upgraded. this area west of 19 from citrus, hernando and pasco county, it's now a tropical storm warning. and the difference in that is the timing frame. could feel tropical storm-force winds within 36 hours. as the system gets closer to us. the watch, the tropical storm watch for inland citrus, hernando and pasco continues. again, that's a 48 hour time frame. and latest forecast from the hurricane center, notice tropical storm, 2:00 tomorrow morning, about this time tomorrow, 50 miles per hour winds. pushing to the north and east, 2:00 afternoon tomorrow, 56 miles per hour winds. one update, this is slower as far as midnight before it makes land fall around the big bend of florida. and notice this orange shaded area, that's th

let's spend some time on the tropics. one of the most important things that we get during the tropical system when there's a system threatening the united states, the men and women for the airforce who are flying their hurricane hunter aircraft actively investigating the storm. op fly. they want to get through that high wall, taking as much data in as they can. this one coming from tampa and macdill. first with tropical depression number 8. no changes with the wind speed. 35 miles an hour is what it remains. therefore it remain as trod -- it has made that right turn. so the forecast track will keep it as a weak tropical depression into early tomorrow morning. then it will speed away. meanwhile, down in the gulf of mexico still a 35-mile-an-hour that has started to make a turn to the north but there's been a nudge to the west in the track of this system. so as it becomes a tropical storm in the next 48 hours it will make landfall close to florida sometime on thursday and speed up the east coast sometime friday either being

that means an update on the track of this tropical system. let's get to steve jerve who joins us with the latest on th >> when you say 5:00, i mean 5:00. it came in 30 seconds ago. we are just looking at it ourselves. let's see what is coming in from the national hurricane center. we have just updated this. they have not upgraded this to a tropical storm. it is tropical depression 9. which is good. we want it to stay weak, but it is in a tough environment. dry air, a lot of wind shear. we didn't anticipate it would have. we noticed some major models trending. you can see the cone of air there does take us out of the cone of error. except for the small part of citrus county. the northern sections there. friday, and eventually into saturday, passing well to the north of us, what this does is we get closer to potential landfall some time on thursday. the cone shrinks just a little more. most of tampa bay is out of the cone of error. that doesn't mean we won't feel some efs. collin. it will go roughly the same path. trending a little further north

if you know the tropical systems, the threshold for a tropical storm is 39. when this came out yesterday, a lot of meteorologists popped up saying well, we have a tropical storm. no. 45 mile-per-hour winds, yep, but it's not wrapping around the circulation, which is the other part you need. why is this important? if the models don't have a center to fix on, they do a terrible job letting us know what they think will the future. garbage in, garbage out. or no data in, very terrible data coming out, right? so what we need is the hurricane hunter aircraft to continue to bring us information. as we fly closer here, you see a bit of a spin there. so it's looking better organized to me this morning. in fact, there we go. the plane is actually on its way. there's one taking off from tampa, by the way. they will be able to let us the state of this system is. regardless, the models are taking it to the north and west. that hasn't changed. the big question is, what kind of shape will it be when it reaches the bahamas or what will it turn into as conditions are more fav

this is ahead of the tropical system. the worst weather will start late tomorrow and all the way through thursday which means rainfall widespread now through friday. 6-8 inches and localized higher totals especially nearhe and further to the north. threat of flooding. heavy rain and on shore wind flow so coastal flooding and rainfall flooding, high surf and high tide happens. you get the higher than average tide coming up further into land than it normally does. the strong wind north of i-four closer to the center of circulation and again, it's still a tropical depression at this point which is great news. less time it has to strengthen. making that turn back to the northeast and heading somewhere along the nature coast to the big bend of florida towards the panhandle. that's why i expect thursday to be the worst weather because that's where the storm is closest. after thursday we get to dry out somewhat dropping the rain chances to 50% friday and saturday. couldn't take the rain chances out completely. >> lots to watch ov

so here is the actual tropical depression. we'll get a new track from the and we'll be able to tell you whether we have 40 mile-per- hour winds and that would make it tropical storm hermine. it's going to continue to move to the north and east. if you're just tuning into the latest forecast no huge changes for us. the only thing the track moved a little further west. that is good news for coastal flooding but as far as the rainfall totals we're still thinking the same thing, in fact even a little more as things have already gotten out of hand in pinellas county there. there's the track thursday 1:00 p.m. making landfall. late thursday into the very early we're going to be on the southern end and that will be favored for coastal flooding along with the potential for some tornadoes. we'll have more on that threat, the flooding and how much rainfall we can expect when i see you in a couple minutes. >>> that storm is a major concern now for people in citrus county. the hurricane watch has people on edge there. along the homosassa r

she's tracking the tropical system. what's the latest? what do we call it? >>lindsay: it's a tropical depression, meaning it's on its way to becoming a tropical storm. which name it gets is kind of up in the air because we have two depressions thi the other approaching the carolinas early this week. if you're curious, it's either going to be hermine or ian. this tropical depression is so close to cuba that it's more over land than water and that's what hurricane hunters are finding this morning. notice the flow around the low and as that green, the rain fills into southeast florida, that's a sign our atmosphere gives us a 60% rain chance today. information. they're out there, getting stats on how this system is doing and where it may be headed today. they're on the way back right now but this information will help our computer models kind of get in more agreement and we're starting to see more agreement this morning so while our confidence is increasing on the track, it's the intensity that is subject to change since this is a developing system. i'm going to

we are tracking the tropics. many of you keeping a close eye on these storms in the atlantic. >> this morning, we have hurricane gaston and also invest 99l which could become a tropical storm. so let's turn it over to meteorologist leigh spann for the latest because it is busy out there, leigh. >> it. and this is the time we expect it to be busy. this is when the most hurricanes and tropical systems are formed over the many, many decades. hurricane gaston, just after midnightam hurricane of the season. not an impact to anyone which is good news. we do have en9l. and it's already bridging some heavy rainfall to puerto rico and the dominican republic and has an 80% chance of developing in the long term. let me show you the latest on gaston, 75 miles per hour winds now making it a hurricane and expected to weaken and then restrengthen. but again, staying out to sea. those are the best kind of storm, right? basically a tropical wave. pretty sure it's going to head toward the bahamas. between now and when it reaches th

. >>> and mo tracking the tropics and tropical depression number nine. it's churning right now north of cuba and could impact florida and possibly the bay area. >>> good monday morning. i'm gene ramirez. >> and i'm melanie michael in for gayle. we have leigh spann tracking the tropics and keeping an eye on the forecast. >> it has been quite active over the last 48 hours. yes, there's tropical depression number nine. and there's also tropical and there's major hurricane gaston. but all eyes for our purposes will be on tropical depression nine. this came in at 11:00 a.m. in the next 45 to 50 minute, i will be getting a brand new update. this is what we're thinking so far f the next 24 hour, it should strengthen to a tropical storm by tomorrow morning into the gulf of mexico. after that, it takes a hard right turn so by wednesday even, it's still a tropical stor more in sights and late thursday, somewhere near the big bend of florida but keep in mind, this could be anywhere from the panhandle down through fort myers before it heads back into the atlantic oce

that's losing its tropical characteristics likely in the next 24 hours. we have tropical we will show thaw in a moment. first, a quick check. that is expected to quickly become a category one hurricane, possibly as soon as tomorrow. the track takes it into the middle of the atlantic. no concern with it. invest 99l, the model takes it through the lesser antilless. a 60% chance of develop into a tropical system within the next system, it has a chance to impact either florida, somewhere in the southeastern united states. no cause for concern just yet but of course, this time of the year we will watch that closely. >>> we are watching traffic as well. and so far, looks good. we have overnight construction in sarasota but right now, i-4 looks great through lakeland between each entrance of the polk parkway, just a 14 minute commute. and i-75, through wesley chapel, just fowler avenue. free and clear of slow downs here. let's go ahead and move over and take a look here at 275 off the howard frankland bridge. this is right by kennedy. that's a good drive as well.

this is the traffic going on out here in the tropics. it is heating up. none of the systems we were looking like they are going to be much of an impact. there is one in the no part of the gulf and one we have been keeping an eye on and a new one over the atlantic along with gaston. we will monitor and let you know there's anything to worry about. right now, looks like a decent beach day. water temperature 80 degrees and air temperature on honeymoon island, rains from the west, 30- 40% chance later this afternoon starting off with temperatures in the upper 70s to around 80 right now. it will get warmer before the falls pinpoint the timing and drill down into the tropical trouble spots coming up in less than 15 minutes. >>> dramatic video from georgia when a roller coaster collapsed in a county fair. you can see several parents rushed to the bride and they are holding -- to the ride. two children were rescued. there were no serious injuries and there's an investigation into how the ride malfunctioned >>> family who recently moved into their new home in el do

the latest information on still tropical storm gaston. max winds of 70 miles per hour. all we need is four and may strengthen to a category two hurricane but well away from the u.s. coastline. no worries for that. and now let's focus on invest 99 now. it's impacting some of the islands. almost all of the models take this system into the bahamas and once it reaches there, it enters the area where i think it's favorable for developing this system. five days out, it has a 70% chance of developing. however, where it goes after in question. one model takes it up the east coast and one takes it into the gulf of mexico. so something we're paying attention to. i'm expecting 93. the record for today is 95. in weather and traffic on the 8s, i have a break down hour-by- hour of your wednesday. >>> let's take a look at what is happening. great drive right now through lakeland. i-4 between each entrance of the parkway, 52 to 75, that's going to take about 11 minutes. sarasota, overnight construction lingering out here the northbound on-ramp from university is blocked. and that should

it's pretty typical with the tropical storm. the rain is well out ahead of the center along with the winds. in fact some of the strongest winds with tropical storms are contained in the rain bands as opposed to the center. so the moisture moves ahead of us, there's the position of the storm by wednesday morning. then into thursday making a pass at us here with gusty winds. certainly and building seas. so dry early for today. then showers and thunderstorms begin to develop. we'll see pretty good downpours. we'll have lightning as well as everything pushes from east-to- west and then we'll get into heavier rain situation beginning tomorrow. continuing into wednesday and then windy with heavy rain on thursday as our tropical storm begins to approach here. so we have plenty of time to watch it but right now looks like a big rain event for us. upwards of six inches potential through the next several days. >> sounds like we need to enjoy the dry roads while we can. >>> if you're heading to the across the bridges. looks like the tampa s

it's busy in the tropics. >> it is. and this is the time of year we expect the tropics to be very busy. again, the peak of hurricane season said to be around september 10th. so we are heading into that peak. so yes, hurricane gaston just after midnight became the third hurricane of the season.

we are seeing the tropics in the atlantic line up. first, we have developed as a tropical storm. 65 miles an hour winds. it is forecast to stay likely out to sea as a category one hurricane. as we see in the atlantic, it is not the best environment for storms to strike with dry air coming off of africa. we have the remnants now of fiona well to the north. and gaston, about a 55% chance of developing.

it is busy in the tropics this morning. let's turn things over to leigh spann. >> yeah, this is the time of year when we expect the tropics to get active. specifically now we're going to focus on hurricane gaston. became the third hurricane of midnight. and this tropical wave just between puerto rico and the dominican republic, it's still an invest meaning it's a tropical wave, not a tropical system at this point. they are sending in the hurricane hunters every day. yesterday, they didn't find a closed circulation. that's good news. and in the short term, actually doesn't have a good chance of developing. but once we get into the five- day range, that's an 80% chance of becoming tropical. and let's focus on gaston with 45 miles per hour winds. should weaken and then strengthen again out to sea. and not an issue for land masses. now that's the difference between that and invest 99. it will impact land masses. it will head toward the bahamas. if it's not a tropical system by the time it heads into the bahamas, good chance it w

earmarks of the tropical storm but it's not there yet. guidance shows it will be tropical storm hermine tomorrow morning and then move northeast to get stronger. could be up to 65-mile-per-hour winds by the time it affects big bend of the florida coast here on thursday afternoon. in advance of that the hurricane watch is posted for the area already. hurricane watch even though it's only tropical depression. that is how confident they are that i take heavy rain across the carolina coastline. especially myrtle beach all the way south to charleston. it will head out to sea. coastal sections will get heavy downpour and winds through friday and saturday. we think for most people the biggest effect along the coast will be rip currents and rough surf of. never fight the rip current. if you get caught in one, relax. stay calm. try to get on your back and float. then swim when you have the energy parallel to the shore. don't swim into shore or farther out. you won't be able to do that. swim parallel to shore. wave for help. better yet, check with t

the big picture. gaston, category 2 hurricane. there's tropical depression number 9 and 8 and away tracks from the national hurricane center. the latest, there it is. if you watch that, it's not completely organized. it's not symmetrical or classical looking but we're starting to see a little bit of a circulation. 35-mile-an-hour winds. it's about 150-miles from cape biloxi or macdill in tampa. they were investigating both systems. a lot of dry air, a lot of upper level winds. we showed you earlier but i want to talk about this another easterly turn and why we're more account -- confident than normal. the entire cluster takes it off to the northeast. remember, when we look at these computer models, going. with tropical depression number 8 and look at tropical depression number 9, also taking that hard turn which will keep it 200 miles off our coastline. we'll start it tomorrow morning. there is what could be a tropical storm, continuing to move off to the northeast, leaving us generally dry tuesday and wednesday and here comes, as we get into wedn
