we need to connect with occupy, the tucson ethnic folks, the black live matter movement with unions and we need to see there is a broad move for sweeping mobilization in the public. once we are mobilized politicians will come. but we need to mobilize. >> politicians don't lead they follow. >> it is very important in discussions to have not just bad news but hope. and in chicago, in the first round of the mayoral election the candidate who was outspent 12-1 came within ten points and denied the candidate who was spending the billionaire's money. >> my question was everything you just finished talking about. but there are two elements and when i think about the ark of history i wonder if it is going to crash and burn at citizens united and jerry mandering in the state. how are those two things overcome? >> this is the most business friendly court since the 1920s. this is a racial reactionary court. it is all a series of 5-4 decisions. we need the change the composition of the core. i am a common law professor spending years trying to figure out the doctrine realizing it is the politics of

let me start by thanking the tucson festival of books for having me and for all of you for coming it is enormously gratifying for me as an author but to see so many people on a beautiful afternoon coming to hear about the supreme court and the constitution is wonderful. [applause] thank-you. i will tell a story that the book begins with. i was teaching with acacia were very familiar with that involves a woman born 1906 and charlottesville virginia with a normal childhood show to local public schools through junior high and always received passing grades. her father left her mother her mother was destitute and had no choice but to place the girls in foster homes. when she was 17 she was raped by her foster father's nephew became pregnant as a result. the foster parents were embarrassed by her pregnancy her foster parents had institutionalized called of homes for epileptics and the feeble minded. she gave birth to a daughter in soon after virginia began to in voluntarily have her sterilized. virginia adopted a eugenics what a short hearing was held. she was given the i.q. test which wa
