to va benefits but is alienated from the va, one of the efforts is to help connect that person to va services. so community organizations, community coalitions can help function as, shall we say, expediters, moving the person from the non-va-recognized status to a va-recognized status, working with veterans' service organizations to engage that person, so if they're eligible for va benefits, they can capitalize off of that full range of benefits. richard, what other populations-are there youth or women affected by homelessness as well? absolutely, and with women in particular, there's both single women who are primarily using the set of homeless services that are tailored towards homeless single adults, as well as women with children. so many families are affected. and they face a number of challenges, both encounters with the criminal justice system but also encounters with the child welfare system, and where their substance use often is a complicating factor with regard to their ability to keep custody of their children. so that is another, i think, challenge that needs to be met.

july 28th, the va launched a probe into the story.tion. september 14th, not that long ago, no more checkbooks if survivors request lump sums. yesterday, house passes a bill requiring greater disclosure to the families. one of the other issues you pointed out was the fact that it was hard for the family to understand this was not fdic insured, and not aware necessarily their money was being retained for a much higher interest rate than the one they were getting paid. what do you think needs to happen next to put an end to this? >> well, among the things we're watching for, on the floor of the house yesterday, congressman steve boyer, he actually objected to that bill, which sounds like transparency. that's a good thing, to require more to the survivors. but he said, time out. he wanted to know why it was there was transparency giving to what he sees as a potentially illegal practice. a lump sum does not mean a checkbook and to simply allow prudential to send out checkb k checkbooks is a big problem. we've got the attorney general inves

incredible story how he left the va ladies and gentlemen and his father booted him across the river and said don't come back until you get your education so he did this and he walked into this urban area and everybody was looking at him if you ask most men there in the back, what's the most proudest moment in your life, most of the men will say the birth of my first born son. not him, he will tell you the proudest moment in my life is to see my two daughters going to school here in the village. the woman on the extreme far right, she's the first girl to get an education in that valley of about 4 thousand people. she first wrote with sticks in the sand and now she's her second year of medical school scoring in the 90's. her father said you should not become a doctor it's really messy but she's determined to go back to her village and become a physician to help her community and it's an incredible story of how like her father she's persevered. this girl is from the afghan border valley of about 4,000 people. she was the first girl to get an education in our village. the communities there
