on the west side of 14th street are oakland police. they are determined not to allow occupy oakland demonstrators back on to city hall property. the camera slowly pans to the right, you can see that city hall and frank ogowa plaza below. surrounding all the streets of downtown for the past six hours have been occupy oakland demonstrators. many of them recently dispursed from this very intersection after police fired a number of tear gas canisters into the crowd. police saying that they were forced to fire those tear gas canisters. the crowd has swollen to approximately 800 people as we move through this six hours of tonight just before they fire at those canisters. the numbers dwindled. 200 in the intersection behind us at 14th and franklin. one of the most significant things to happen tonight, again, are those tear gas canisters. one, apparently struck one of the demonstrators in the head. we were able to capture that event actually on camera. as well, there was a direct confrontation between demonstrators and the police at 8th and was

the chopping block. katie is live with more. >> reporter: after much emotional, sometimes heated debate this is decision day in oakland and west contra costa county. in oakland five schools are in danger of being closed. over the past few months several contentious meetings, parents made the case for their school to stay open. district officials say enrollment is down and so is funding. the closures would displace 900 students and dozens of teachers. the district would save two million dollars a year, less than 1% of the general fund. the schools in jeopardy are lake view, lazear, marshal, maxwell park and sante fe in north oakland in west contra costa county two schools on the chopping block shannon and lake elementary. last month the school board voted to payoff a loan and keep the campuses open. then the state intervened and said that plan would not work and ruled the schools would close. west contra costa is having a special meeting to decide how to prioritize its budget to include a vote to determine if funds are dedicated to the schools. that meeting is 6:00 this evening. in oakland the meeting is at 5:00 at oakland tech
