us live from charlotte. nick, it looks quiet behind you there after an incredibly violent night. talk to us about what has happened there and what the scene is there at 3:33 in the morning. >> the situation was incredibly ugly just a couple of hours ago. we're in front of one of the string of businesses vandalized by demonstrators. what began as a peaceful protest at 7:00 or 8:00 local time turned violent quickly. this is what's been left behind. you can see some of the businesses are just beginning the cleanup process within the last hour. cleaning up the glass. there was graffiti, black lives matter, protesters painting blm on some of the businesses. as we walked up this block here, about a half mile up, it's more of the same. we saw evidence of looting. evidence of vandalized businesses. we also saw these left behind tear gas canisters or smoke flash bangs the police were launching at the demonstrators to try to disperse them. news crews were attacked. police officers were injured. some of them remain as they continue to block the guard here, north carolina highway patrol. as w
