nbc bay area's thom jensen joins us in dublin where one of those men is in jail. thom? windham latham is the 42-year-old professor from northwestern university accused in the killing ever a young hairdresser in chicago at his apartment. his attorney said he will voluntarily return to chicago to face charges in that murder but still mystery tonight is the relationship, the exact relationship between those two men and a motive. it was strange from the start. two men from prestigious universities. 42-year-old windham latham and associate professor from the chicago area's northwestern university. and his alleged accomplice andrew warren, a 56-year-old financial officer at oxford. both accused of murder. latham's attorney talked to reporters before his client's initial appearance in court. >> what he is accused of is totally contrary to the way he has lived his entire life. >> reporter: the statement echoes those of latham's family, friends and co-workers. the accusations are grisly. police found the body of 26-year-old trenton cornell face down in the bedroom at latham's ch

nbc bay area's thom jensen is at the space and science center in oakland. a great viewing spot there as well. >> reporter: the rent here much cheaper. free at the chabot space and science center. the viewing starts about 8:00 in the morning, about two hours before the total eclipse of the sun. they won't be showing the event from the powerful telescopes here. instead it will be broadcast by nasa and shown on the theater screens at the center. all free to the public. the observatory observation deck will also be open for live viewing. the sun will be about 75% eclipsed by the moon here in the bay area when it reaches that peak roughly at about 10:15 tomorrow morning. we talked to a couple of families here today. parents and kids who say there is no way they'll miss this rare opportunity. >> it's the sun, the moon, the stars, planets, those sorts of things. doesn't happen very often. it's neets for them to see it. >> the eclipse only happens once in forever. that's why it's important to see it. >> reporter: eye doctors say the harmf fuful ultra violet radiat

"today in the bay's" thom jensen has more on how the city is preparing. >> reporter: at a community meeting berkeley's police chief tells neighbors he's doing all he can to keep the peace this weekend. during recent protests violence has sometimes spilled over into nearby neighborhoods. >> i think people are concerned about the potential for violence and, of course, any violence is upsetting the city. >> reporter: the chief says he will not give specifics how his department is preparing for sunday's rally and counterprotest. he's hoping counterprotesters will stay away from civic center park where far right groups are expected to stage their rally. >> our responsibility is to plan thoroughly, to consider the worst case contingency and be ready to scale up or down our approach to manage whatever comes our way. >> reporter: the postal service is also hoping things will remain peaceful but it's also taking a drastic step. >> there are assets and we want to protect them. >> reporter: the postal service will remove 12 of its collection boxes in berkeley as well as another 50 in san francisco ahe
