newsroom, thompson wants to make sure passengers are protected. allison. >> reporter: pam, and after some new protections went into effect last year, it has been an incredible turn around just a handful of cases of airlines breaking the rules. even this past christmas that big storm in new york airports were basically crippled but still passengers were given food and water and allowed to get off the plane if it had been stuck for more than three hours. the department of transportation set a fine of $27,000 last year for every passenger stuck more than three hours. but airlines don't like these new rules at all. they've been canceling a lot more flights. in fact, there were nearly 30,000 more flight cancellations last year than before those fines took effect. now house republicans are pushing to reverse the rules. but today passenger groups and congressional democrats like congressman mike thompson are pushing to make the rules even stronger. in fact, a woman from the bay area is taking the lead on all of this. we have a crew doing an interview wit
