we begin tonight with nbc's anne thompson at the vatican. anne, good evening. >> reporter: good evening, brian. with just three days left in his papacy, the vatican wanted the spotlight to be on pope benedict. instead the world is seeing the darker side of the church, the in-fighting and scandals that today claimed britain's highest-ranking catholic. for scotland's cardinal o'brien, the end came with astonishing swiftness. today o'brien resigned and said he will not attend the conclave to elect a new pope. the first cardinal in history to stay away, because of a personal scandal. sunday, a british newspaper published accusations by three priests and a former priest that o'brien engaged in inappropriate behavior with them, going back to the 1980s. >> holy father accepted the resignation -- >> reporter: 24 hours later, pope benedict accepted o'brien's resignation as archbishop of saint andrews and edinborough. >> quite upsetting. >> the catholic church is in quite a bit of turmoil. >> reporter: o'brien denied the claims and said in a statement

i'm anne thompson in rome. >>> one of those with a vote is roger mahoney, the former bishop of los angeles. he's expected in court. he's facing a deposition of accusations he maneuvered behind the scenes to protect accused priests and to protect the church. despite those accusations and being removed as archbishop in l.a. he still remains a cardinal in the church and that qualifies him to cast a vote in selecting the next pope. critics are calling on mahoney to remove himself from voting. but cardinal law faced the same and still cast a vote in the election of pope benedict. >> varying opinions on who should be the next pope. the new leader will be in place in two weeks. today in downtown san jose many said they're sad to see the pope step down. they praise him for the work he's done but understand why he's retiring. some say they're looking for the church to go in a new direction. >> i think that it's good that he decided to resign if he feels that he's aging enough that he can't be in control of the church and the decisions, and perhaps it's time to put someone in who is significantly yo

anne thompson outside vatican city with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, erica. a mixture of joy and intrigue here in vatican city. catholics and the curious jammed st. peter's square to hear pope benedict's final sunday blessing. the 100,000 people who attended on got not only a blessing but heard the pope shed light on why he resigned. he said that god called him to the mountain to live a life of more prayer and meditation. he wasn't going to abandon the church. the pontiff said god asked him to live this life with the same kind of dedication, but to do so in a way that was more appropriate to his age and strength. now, this very joyous event took place against a background of scandal. there are new headlines in britain this morning, three priests and a former priest, accused the scottish cardinal keith o'brien of inappropriate behavior going back some 30 years. they want cardinal o'brien to resign immediately before he comes to rome to vote for the new pope. i asked the papal spokesperson about this today. he told me that the pope will be informed of this matt
