nbc's anne thompson has more from the capital, imam. >> reporter: jordan just 2% christian, yet there is genuine excitement here about pope francis' visit. he brings a message of compassion, peace, and outreach that has those charged with protecting him on high alert. this mob scene in rio, when the pope's driver took a wrong turn, is exactly what the security forces in jordan, the palestinian territories, and israel want to avoid. but pope francis wants to be close to the people. he doesn't want an amored car, bulletproof glass, or large security presence. in jerusalem, orthodox jews protested the pope's visit. anti-christian graffiti has been scrawled on christian sites. to protect the pope, they'll use uniformed and undercover forces. >> we have more than 3,000 police officers involved in the security operation, with emphasis on jerusalem. >> reporter: francis' trip begins here in jordan, where this morning this father celebrated mass. his ministry includes 350 refugee families from syria and iraq, some of whom will meet the pope on saturday. >> they feel that they are not numbers.
