tiffany wilson is live in the bay view. getting better, tiffany. >> reporter: yeah, it is getting better, kristen. that 12-inch water main break happened about midnight. you can see a lot of activity right here behind me. this is actually good news. these are crews who are cleaning up an earlier barrier that had been made to help divert the water that was gushing down the street. now you can see that water has slowed down. so they are cleaning it up. again, the crews were able to shut off the water supply to that pipe several hours ago. so the situation now is much more in control. about half a dozen homes were flooded and some families woke up to flooded garages. others woke up overnight to flooded basements. but with the firefighters able to create the barrier that's now being cleaned up, the flooding didn't impact as many homes as initially expected. at firts it was reported that several dozen homes had been flooded. now it's down to about six or seven. tyrone with the san francisco public utilities commission has been he

abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson joins us live from the bay view district. how's it looking right now, tiffany? >> reporter: well, matt, the situation is improving, but crews still have a long way to go. if you look over my shoulder, up the hill to where there's a truck parked up there, that's the focus right now. it's very close to where the pipe broke. two pumps are working to evacuate the water in the sink hole that was created by the water main break. once they're able to access the pipe, they will start doing repairs. the public utilities commission says it was a 12-inch water main installed in 1953 that ruptured around midnight. water gushed down keith street and flooded the basements and garages of half a dozen homes. family members tried to make impromptu barriers with pieces of wood. the fire department also created a barrier of sand and asphalt to help redirect the water into strorm drains. the cleanup and repair process is expected to take hours. >> so we're going to open up the pavement, expose the pipeline that broke, and take a look and see what

abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is live. >> reporter: well, the good news is the water that we'reeeing flowing right now, nothing like what happened overnight. the break actually occurred about a block up on keith street. you can see some crews up there working right now. then all of that water pouring down from the 12-inch pipe break came down keith street into homes that are at the bottom of the hill. so crews worked overnight to build this barrier you can see to redirect the water into some drainpipes so that it wouldn't go into more basements. if you take a look at the video from earlier, you can see families who were trying to divert the water from going into their homes, and the good news to report right now, the san francisco public utilities commission downgraded the number of homes impacted. initially they were saying a couple dozen. now they say it's just six or seven homes that had flooded basements and garages. however, about three blocks worth of houses currently have no water access, and pg&e was called out to check on their utility equipment. >> the homeowners came
