abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson is monitoring the fire from our newsroom. as the breaking details. good morning, tiffany. >> good morning, nat asia and reggie. the thomas fire has grown by thousands of acres in just the past few hours, strong winds and dry fuel are driving the flames toward downtown ventura right now. flames have already crossed into the city limits. we have seen dozens of homes burning. this is a live look from the kabc chopper, you can see structures that are burning, others that are threatened. authorities say at least one person has died, one firefighter was injured and at least 150 structures have burned already. that number is going to go up. a mobile home park, an apartment complex and a behavioral hospital are all among the destroyed buildings. deputies were going door to door overnight waking up people in the evacuation zen and at last update 27,000 people and about 8,000 homes are under mandatory evacuation. there is widespread power outages, several school districts are closed and many roads are shut down. >> the prospects for con

abc 7 news reporter tiffany wilson was with them as they departed for the front lines. >> reporter: 22 north bay firefighters gathered in the predawn darkness, greeting each other with handshakes and hot cups of coffee. strike team leader jeff rowan says they started monitoring the raging thomas fire last night. >> they have predicted santa ana winds pretty severe, plain the worst of the season that we were told. so kind of had an idea that maybe we would get called out down south, sure about 4:30 we got the call. >> reporter: within minutes firefighters from tiberon, ross valley, and marin county fire departments starting packing up. two hours later the convoy assembled. five trucks gathered at the richmond san rafael toll plaza, they expect the drive to southern california to last six or seven hours. they don't know how long they'll be away from home but do know they'll face similar conditions to the recent wine country wildfires. >> santa ana winds down in southern california, similar to what happened up here. . >> reporter: before leaving, they briefly circled up, introduced themse

tiffany wilson joins us live in redwood city to tell us what led up to this officer-involved shooting. what can you tell us? >> reporter: hi. i just spoke to the police chief. he said while it just took place outside a wells fargo bank it was not bank robbery. a woman droeb up to use the atm outside of the wells fargo behind me and she saw a man pacing, acting very agitated with a gun clearly visible. she calls 911 and that's when officers responded. the officers recognized the man. they say he was well known in the redwood city area, they had been ware of him since he was 8 years old, so they started engaging him in conversation, talking to hum, trying to get him to drop the gun but he refused and after multiple minutes witnesses say this happened next. >> the gentleman wasn't complying with the officers demand, so it seemed to me he pulled something out of his sweater at which point the officers started firing their weapons and wounding the gentleman. he fell to the ground. >> reporter: and the interim police chief say he didn't just pull the gun out of his sweater. h fired in the o
