apple was sort of making some buzz worthy comments through ceo tim cook. he was at this conference called all things digital yesterday. he said that he hopes that one day you'll see an apple product actually manufactured here in the u.s. of course the company has faced a ton of criticism about its plants in china and the working conditions there especially those operated by apple supplier foxcon. cook pointed out that certain components like chip and glass for iphone and ipad are made right here in america but the problem is it is much more expensive to hire u.s. workers here and there's also this sense that we're not so up to speed in certain areas with critics saying the u.s. doesn't have a strong electronics manufacturing hub. now cook also spent a lot of time at this conference talking about former ceo steve jobs who died in october. specifically he talked about how important it is to keep forging ahead. >> at some point late last year or i sort of somebody kind of shook me and said it's time to get on and so that sadness was replaced with this intense

and so, look, tim cook wants to make things in the u.s. instead of china, but what would that cost?o we found out. we contacted ihs market research about what it would cost per iphone to move manufacturing from china back here. so if you just consider labor costs. labor costs alone, it's an extra $25 an iphone. now, when you're looking at $225 in china and $250 in the u.s., you may say, hey, that's not much. but it's a lot. apple sells a lot of phones. in the u.s. there's also health benefits to consider and they'd have to build new factories here. because a lot of the parts aren't made here. and all the microprocessor chips inside iphones, every single one, made for apple is made by samsung. which brings me to tonight's number. 28. yesterday samsung launched its new galaxy 3 phone in 28 countries. hundreds of people were lining up at stores around the world. nope, not at apple stores, samsung store. the kind of anticipation you usually only see for an apple product. so is samsung the new apple? this is startling. last year samsung passed apple as the world's top smartphone maker. i

tim cook promised "some incredible things," from the company, without giving any more detail.the deal for auto parts retailer pep boys is no more. the company's $804 million private equity buyout has been canceled. the buyer walked away after disappointing results at the retailer. news of no deal sent pep boy shares into a tailspin, down almost 20%, trading below where they were before the deal was announced. according to regulatory filings, the buyer wanted to delay the buyout, but pep boys did not. retailers will likely be in focus tomorrow with many of them reporting may same store sales. department store macy's was among the first to turn in its results today. shares were down 1.8% even though may sales were better than expected thanks to its growing onlineusiness. in our e.t.f. apple says tim cook will forgo $75 million dividend payout. that comes as the maker of iphones, and ipads says it will allow employees the same dividend as other apple investors. in an unusual move, apple is awarding them a $2.65 a share quarterly dividend on their restricted stock units. tom, you surely remember that apple announced the dividend payout back in april. the stock at that time was around $600 a share. now it's more like $560. but it was a very controversial move because steve jobs was always opposed to dividends but they're doing it and giving the employees a big chunk. >> tom: lots of shareholder pressure because of the hundreds of millions of dollars in cash on the books there at apple. until about 2:00 p.m. eastern time, the s&p 500 hovered on either side of unchanged, encouraged partly by the stronger consumer confidence report. but the index settled into negative territory and finished with a fraction loss. the index remains well off its april high for the year, but still is up almost 5% since january. trading volume fell co
