tim johns, abc seven news. >> okay, tim, thank you for that. in the east bay, a former alameda county sheriff's deputy was sentenced to 50 years to life in prison today for killing a dublin husband and wife. that is according to the east bay times. former deputy devin williams was convicted of shooting maria and benson tran execution style with his service pistol in 2022 at their home in front of their family. their teenage son held maria tran as she died. evidence indicated williams was enraged and obsessed. following a months long relationship with maria tran, nine sheriff's deputies and two medical employees are facing felony charges in connection with the death of an inmate at the santa rita jail in dublin. >> that's according to a new report by a media media partners at the east bay times. a maurice monk was found unresponsive in his cell three years ago. an attorney for his family says he was left alone without adequate medication or care, and may have been dead for days before deputies found him. last week, sheriff yesenia sanchez acknow

tim johns abc seven news. >> all right, tim, thank you. another rough day at san francisco international airport, where hundreds of flights were delayed or canceled. of course, because of the weather, the wind remains a problem, particularly for inbound flights. flightaware puts the average delay for arrivals around three hours, and a look at the dangerous conditions on the roads today. >> there were two accidents in orinda around 11 a.m. on highway 24, both within minutes of each other near wilder road. one was a single car crash requiring a tow on the eastbound side. in the second crash, a pickup truck rolled several times with two other vehicles involved on the westbound side. the three occupants of the truck were taken to the hospital. they are expected to recover. members or numbers from the chp today showing an increase in bay area traffic incidents already last wednesday into thursday afternoon, there were roughly 2800 reports compared to this wednesday into this afternoon, there were 3200 reports on the roads. that's a rise of 14.7

tim johns, abc seven news. >> okay, tim, thanks so much. all right. >> so let's get to that weather. we want to find out exactly what's going on. >> meteorologist sandhya patel has been very busy today tracking the storm. sandhya. >> yeah. this atmospheric river. dan and ama is just getting started with us. so as we take a look here, it has been just pushing a steady stream of moisture into the north bay. which explains why the north bay has been seeing rainfall in inches from santa rosa to san rafael to venado. over seven inches of rain has fallen there. let's get you into street level radar, where it is pouring right now. and that is santa rosa. seeing some heavy rain across highway 101. as we look in other parts of the area right now, tomales road, dillon beach, we're also seeing some downpours, some of the rainfall rates, about a half an inch an hour. you can bet this is what's causing some of the flooding on small streams and creeks and roadways. so the flood advisory has expanded. it's an urban and small stream flood advisory for part

tim johns, abc seven news. >> all right. thank you so much, tim. and this week, stormy weather is impacting flights in the bay area. this is a live look at san francisco international airport where 500 flights were delayed. today. that's less than yesterday. fewer than yesterday. but about the same as wednesday, the first day of the storm. there have also been dozens of canceled flights. we want to continue our team coverage in the south bay, where many people spent the earlier part of the day preparing for the rain. abc seven news reporter zach fuentes is live in san jose for us. hi, zach. >> hey there amelia. the conditions have really worsened here. earlier in the day, in the morning, earlier in the afternoon, we didn't really see much rain here in san jose. but later this afternoon and as you can see this evening, the rain has intensified and the winds have picked up quite a bit too. and all of this weather coming as christmas in the park here in san jose is being set up. we got a look at how crews are working to protect the festive structures.

in vallejo, tim johns, abc seven news. >> happening today. open enrollment begins for covered california. it calls itself the nation's most successful health care exchange. what's new? 40,000 daca recipients can now sign up for coverage thanks to more federal funding. open enrollment runs through the end of january. the website is covered. ca .com. also starting today, several counties across the bay area are bringing back mask mandates in health care settings. the mandates are expected to last through march. in alameda, contra costa and napa counties, staff at health care facilities will be required to mask up. in san mateo county, both staff and visitors will need a mask and santa clara county has the toughest restrictions, with a mandate for staff, visitors and patients. >> we're down to just four days until election day, if you can believe it. according to the university of florida election lab. 70 million americans have already cast their ballots either in person or through vote by mail. maybe you have already. in 2020, a record 154 mill

the average roadway has a life expectancy between 18 and 25 years in vallejo, tim johns, abc 7 news. in the south bay, a man is in jail after police say he was found in a middle school girls locker room in san jose recording students. abc 7 news reporter louis pena spoke to parents who were questioning the school's safety. parents and students at brett hart middle school are questioning how a complete stranger walked on campus on monday and entered the girls' locker room with no one stopping him. it was crazy. san jose police confirming there were multiple students in the locker room who shot him with a phone. the suspect did have a mobile device and was recorded inside of the locker room. one parent whose daughter was in the pe class in question said students saw the teacher acknowledge the suspect. the pe teacher saw the student or saw the person come in suppose he said hi to him. so students saw him walk by. minutes later, several students reported the stranger to school staff. he was in the bathroom for a while and he was obviously supposedly taking pictures, you know, so it's co

abc seven news reporter tim johns was in court today, and he's following the story. >> the battle over the renaming of oakland's airport made its way to federal court thursday afternoon. court documents show. the city of san francisco believes the airport's recent name change to san francisco bay, oakland international airport violates its long standing trademark and causes confusion among travelers inside court. attorneys for the port of oakland, which runs the airport, argued that that was untrue and that the name simply helps identify oakland airport with the bay area region. the debate has also gotten the attention of several airline analysts, including locally based henry heartfelt. >> a source at one airline has told me that his carrier routinely sees a couple of people a week showing up at sfo when they booked flights out of oakland. >> harteveldt says the airport's renaming is an attempt by oakland leaders to attract more travelers and money to the east bay hub, but he questions whether or not it will actually work. >> we're not going to add or drop flights to okay based on its

tim johns abc seven news. >> a vigil is happening today in bodega bay for the five people who died when their boat capsized while crabbing a couple of weeks ago. a 13 year old boy from san jose is the only one who survived. he told abc seven news last week it was cold and windy at the time, and he was able to climb into a cooler to survive. there's a gofundme set up to help the impacted families, and you can find that link right on our website. abc seven news.com. in san francisco, a dog was shot and killed by police on friday. officers were responding to a call about a group of dogs attacking an owner and their small dog. the attack started near the parking lot of a safeway in the fillmore district, right around 11 a.m. when officers arrived, they saw three dogs attacking someone else. that's when they opened fire, killing one of the dogs. a second dog was confined. police then chased the third dog to kimball playground. just a few blocks away. they shot that dog, but it's still alive. animal care and control. say the dogs were large adult canine corsos and were likely living in a van.
