zerlina maxwell, tim miller worked on jeb bush's 2016 campaign and hosts the bulwark podcast as well msnbc political analyst. okay, so shaq, you were at that town hall, q&a, dance party last night. today, a cnbc anchor revealed trump had apparently agreed to do an interview with them, but then canceled. what do we know about what's happening in the campaign? >> well, the trump campaign says that that interview was canceled essentially because of a scheduling conflict, suggesting that the former president had some battleground state stops later this week that conflicted with when that interview was set to happen. it is happening as he's receiving a lot of pressure and criticism from democrats in the harris campaign suggesting he's essentially ducking mainstream media scrutiny. we know, for example, he didn't participate in the "60 minutes," interview, he declined to do a second debate with vice president kamala harris, and that, of course, now he's pulling out of this cnbc interview. now the trump campaign is highlighting that even right now, you see it on the side of the screen, he i

tim miller is a spokesman for the rnc, they join me now. one of the things i've been looking at that's interesting, when you look at models that use the kind of standard economic macro indicators in an election year they are more bullish for the democrats. that's partly because of this strange economic situation. but the consumer sentiment number really said something to me. into the polling gains across a bunch of polls, harris seems to -- the economy. how much does it matter in the end? >> i think it matters. you see reflected in what the two candidates are talking about on the air. there was an analysis of what the harris campaign is talking about it with the trump campaign is talking about. the trump campaign is talking a lot more about crime than immigration and much less about the economy or inflation. while the harris campaign is talking about tax fairness and trump giving tax breaks to the wealthy. they talk about the plans that harris has been talking about in her closing argument, the importance of caregiving and taking care of ca

. >> returning to our conversation, tim miller is here, plus david jolly is here.miller, your thoughts. >> i'm glad that president obama is out there doing that. i think for a number of reasons, we have been talking about how democrats need to speak on these podcasts. there are younger men listening to them. there's more even of a battle space there. i just think on the issue of immigration, it's like the issue of guns. democrats have been bit by this. they are afraid to go on offense. while they have vulnerabilities, on immigration, it's framed as the former president framed that where we are going to have mass deportations, put somebody as incompetent as donald trump in charge of a government program with rogue sheriffs that are going in and grabbing people out and getting some criminals but also people that are here legally and brothers of people here legally. a lot of stories from the first trump administration that shocked the conscience of the nation. that included republicans, people that want a secure border. i think going on offense on that issue is smart.
