tim tooten has an update. >> the official search to replace retired superintendent dr. sidney ended last year. the school system held a public hearing that conducted a survey to find the correct person for the job. >> we think we are on schedule now. the board hopes to be meeting with the consultants the week of the 6th of march. we should have some -- a list of candidates at that point. >> even though the county executive will have a say in who is hired for the top education job, he's hoping the board will pick someone who will keep the district on track academically. the same could be said for howard county teachers who say they are hoping the new superintendent is also educator friendly. >> we are hoping for a superintendent that listens to his or her educators. we have some processes for that now. there is one seat or two seats on policy review committees for teachers. that can be done better if more people can be brought into it. >> school officials say they will make sure the public meets the finalists before they cast a final vote. >> this is the leader of our sc

tim tooten is live with the story. >> he says he is already counting the costs. he says, trying to even put part of that bill through could cause great pain for the school system. >> the county executive made the rounds at the chamber of commerce in ellicott city talking pensions. he said he is concerned about what he heard this week from gov. o'malley in his state of the state speech, namely that teacher pensions should be with the governor called "a shared responsibility" in which local governments will pay half the cost. >> if that passes, it will jeopardize the progress we have been able to make in howard county. we will be making the case for the next 90 days. >> if the measure goes through, howard and many other local government leaders, could be forced to tighten their belts on education. that is something that is important for the county executive and the outgoing school superintendent, who seems more optimistic about the future. >> there will be a challenge to continue the level of services that we have had in the past, but we will find a way. in 1993, w

tim tooten is live in the newsroom. what is their secret of success? >> over the years, maryland seems to have found a way to get more students to take ap courses and passed them. this appears to be paying off. these students have one thing in common, they are all taking four or more advanced placement courses. >> it definitely reflects well to colleges that you try to take the hardest classes you can. i like to think that i take them for the educational value. >> maryland has caught the attention of the college board that designs the ap courses. maryland students taking the exam and burning a score of 3 or higher is up 1.5% over last year. this study hall help students get ahead and prepare more of them for college. that is not the only motivation. >> i am not just focused on getting the credit for college as i am taking more rigorous courses. those come into play, but i am also taking more challenging courses. >> there are other reasons why students are taking in passing the courses. >> those students generally do better. we think it is because they
