earlier i spoke with the tlc chairwoman on the phone. i asked about her position on lyft.ithr position has been lyft that we welcome new technology. we welcome innovation. we have even gone to court to fight for the right to allow passengers to use their smart phone to hail a taxi. when it comes to safety, vehicle drivers, weetting cannot undermine the taxi system and the hiring system in new york. we have standards that must be met. in order to operate in new york city, lyft must meet those standards. leadership claims their safety standards are even better than new york city taxi standards. for example, the driving age is 21 whereas for new york city driver it is 19. how do you respond to that? >> they have a list of what they say is improve safety standards. when you strip away -- it is not true. there is continuing vetting under the tlc system to make sure you maintain those qualifications. that is absent from lyft's model . if you have an arrest after you -- there is drug testing annually. there is educational requirements that far of strip what lyft is suggesting. i

there are only allowed to use tlc, taxi and limousine commission cars.hey're only allowed to use tlc, taxi and limousine commission drivers. the whole point of lyft it is a peer to peer ride sharing service. if i am driving and i am a qualified lyft driver and you want to go with me, i can swing by and pick you up and we split the costs. that is the idea. this is not that idea. i think it is awful. >> so we're not going to see you or alexis ohanian of reddit hitting the streets tonight picking up random -- >> not unless i figure out how to get the taxi and limousine commission to give me a license and fit out my car with a license. i think cory is probably legally allowed to do that because he is to be a yellow cab driver. >> do you still have your license? >> my taxi license has long since expired, matt. new york city has a history of dangerous and bad drivers, which is why the license requirement began in the first place. licensing above and beyond and not just having drivers, but a class five license in new york state. >> but the yellow cab drivers ar

and they went about that by buying a base and now they can only use tlc licensed drivers and tlc licensedaid sharing is not part of the deal. is there no way sharing is allowed? what do you make of some petitions that had 10,000 signatures wanting people or companies to bring sharing to the city? >> it's funny. they say they want the peer to peer model in new york but it's ironic the number of aspects of their model that are already here in new york. so one of the aspects is drivers can work part time, it's flexible, in a peer to peer model. you can do that in new york. there's no set number of hours that a tlc licensed driver has to operate. >> close to $5,000 up front, doesn't it? >> to get the license. >> kind of knocks out the teacher, the fireman, the single parent that wanted to do the traditional model for this app. >> not really. we have a number of teachers that are tlc licensed drivers that -- >> but spend $5,000. my question is whether you feel that the regulations that you have at the moment are keeping up with the sort of innovation that we have in the space and whether that
