mayor tom barrett of milwaukee. fers the former dane county commissioner kathleen falk. the largest public employee union asked who is running and directing people to bloggers saying that barrett supported governor walker's union crippling legislation. as they put it. barrett says that is not the case. back with the panel. juan, it seems like a big fight internally before you bet to the big fight of the recall. >> absolutely. because you know, it reminds me of what happened in arkansas. where you see the unions come in and say you are not authentically a friend because you didn't support us in every area that we wanted. that is what we have seen play out now. the democrats have to pick someone who can win. at the moment, generic candidate is beating governor walker. if you start to name them specifically, they move. there is a lot of pressure to bring in a bigger named democrat. again, the union aren't concerned of herb cole or russ feingold coming in, who could defeat the governor. they are interested in someone say

the two leading democratic challengers are milwaukee mayor tom barrett, who lost to walker in 2010, and kathleen falk, a former countyive. falk has received more than $4 million from labor uns unions, which plays a key role in collecting the really pets. falk played up union support in a tv ad last week. >> one was there from the start, one has been endorsed by wisconsin workers. >> reporter: barrett meanwhile has targeted walker's leadership and handling of the economy. >> scott walker has divided our state, and while he's pursued his ideological agenda, last year wisconsin lost more jobs than any state in the country. >> reporter: the democratic primary is next week, but walker isn't waiting. he went on the air last week with a tv ad knocking barrett over milwaukee's unemployment and tax rates. for more on what's at stake and the national implications of the recall, we're joined from madison by fred reek afreyburg of wisconsin public television, and people of both the republican and democratic persuasions watched from the rest of the country, as wisconsin went through its to and fro.

walker faces a recall election in june and in a match up between the democratic major of milwaukee, tom barretter actually barrett by 5 points. 50 to 45. and in a contest with christine falk walker leads her by seven points. now one reason walker is facing a recall is because last year he signed a voter id measure that requires voters to show a government-issued id at polling places. civil rights groups claim that that disenfranchises the young, minorities and poor and the law was ruled unconstitutional last month. but today the state supreme court declined to fast track any appeal, meaning this issue actually won't be resolved until after the june recall, and maybe even later than that. so for perspective on the battle for scott walker's seat, and voter ids i'm joining by former wisconsin democratic governor jim doyle. governor thank you for being here. >> governor it's my pleasure. >> you can call me jennifer. we worked a lot of years together. i like to compare wisconsin to michigan, because they are heavily unionized states. were you surprised by the overwhelming response to try to recall s

polls show walker has pulled five points ahead of the leading democratic candidate milwaukee mayor tom barretti'm joined by john. this is the play book. he's going all over the country begging for money, spending money in wisconsin. it's not coming from within the state, and it seems to be working on the polls. what do you make of it? >> i think it's working up to a point. one thing i'll remind you is we have had polls that show him up five points, up two, down two. what we're dealing with is a very intense race. at this point, scott walker has had the tremendous advantage of being on air now since november. both with his own campaign and super pacs and independent expenditures backing him. it's not surprising that he's at around 50%. what is striking to me is he can't get above that. he's had no luck getting beyond that. right now we've had a democratic race. it's relatively intense. i think it's going to continue to be for a couple of weeks. where you should really start to look at the polls is after may 8th when the democrats have a clear contender and when it's real one-on-one fight. the o
