our tom foreman is ready to do a reality check on all of that.ly over the impact of these cuts. are these warnings realistic? >> reporter: well, the head of the transportation department, secretary ray lahood, has done the same thing. said this is a big, big area of concern out there. and i've been getting a lot of questions on our "ask tom" thing to do about this very question. the main warning here is that there could be 90-minute delays at major airports. and we're talking about places like atlanta and chicago and houston, places like that out in l.a. but mainly at peak times and a lot of traffic there. here is the tricky part. how do you know for sure if that's what you're going to run into. for starters, because of the way they're going to handle any furloughs or layoffs, it's going to take some time before this would happen. you wouldn't expect it next week or the next week. but in the weeks after that, maybe it starts trickling through. more like the end of the month. nonetheless, let's look at the math here and why they say they're going

tom foreman is live in washington to break it all down. hi, tom. >> reporter: bring in a little more down to earth at this part. march comes in like a lion out like a lamb in terms of weather. in terms of the cuts, coming in like a lamb but could go out like a lion. the forced budget cuts went into effect, what did you feel? the truth is, nothing, by and large pap few people saw little things. by and large most people didn't see anything. that's going to be that way for a little bit of time here because essentially what's happening is the news. the official action that puts all of this in place is happening through these weeks. when you may yet see nothing going on but believe me, a little fire started she eed her starting to grow. the end of the month, talking about real potential impacts here. for example, as you hit the end, all the notice the sent out will kick in. the end of the month you'll see some kind of closures at national parks. see the lines at airports. i say this guardedly, because it's not entirely clear how much you're goin

our tom foreman is in washington. tom, great to see you.ow, trying to cut through all of this. is it safe to say that approximately a 9% cut across the board is a good sort of overall way to sort of look at starting to talk about this? break it down for us. >> yeah, it's reasonable to talk about it that way. but then you have to put it in context. for example, remember the sequestration is a ten-year deal. acro across-the-board cut right now but for the remaining years, cutting the amount of increase, which most people would not consider a cut. so that will be a little bit different down the road. let's look at that number you mentioned. if you look at this, federal budget, $3.8 trillion. for all these different programs. and we're only talking about taking out $85 billion. so a lot of people have been sending me questions, saying, how is it possible that $85 billion can have an impact on all of this? the first way it has an impact is because we're not talking about all of this. that $85 billion is really only coming out of part of the budg

our tom foreman is in washington with answers. what are people asking you, tom? >> reporter: asking about everything, bri. the simple truth, this is complicated. for those who cover it. a tweet, how many jobs will be lost due to the forced spending cuts? a big concern. not only jobs not good in the country but adding more tore it. all guesswork at this point. the congressional budget office thinks about 750,000 jobs over a period of months. a point of reference. in january added 157,000 jobs. about four times that many in the other direction but spread out over a little time. and another, related questions on twitter. why will so many people lose their jobs jb what types of jobs will be lost? this is straight cause and effect in terms of government workers. if a department has less money for salaries and can't reduce pay levels. often it can't because of labor agreements, curting jobs may be the only recourse. jobs are certain to be lost beyond the government as well. a tweet from the char, my husband lost his job today due to anticipated budget cuts. indirectly

here is cnn's tom foreman. >> all of the airplanes flying across the country will soon have fewer eyes watching them because of the the towers being closed. let's take a look at where they are, because it's not even although it's close to close. florida is losing 14. that's the most. texas losing 13. california, 11. the faa says it has to do it because it has a lot of people who are employed by it who are air traffic controllers. you want to cut cost and close the towers and you take them out of their jobs and you have a savings as painful as it may be. does it make things less safe? that's the big question. here is what we know. there are small traffic towers all over the country and handle thousands of flights every day that come and go, and they scan the skies around the area, and they scan the ground and keep an eye out for any kind of obstacle, whether it's flying or a vehicle or animal or anything else. if you get rid of those you are absolutely getting rid of one layer of protection for the plane flying in here, but there are other towers that overlap in terms of their radar sig

cnn's tom foreman is taking a closer look at this very, very diverse flock. what are we seeing right now, tom? >> reporter: if you want to understand how surprising it is this pope was selected you have to look beyond what happened in this room with the 115 cardinal electors and look at the bigger catholic world where catholics are all over this planet and how that may have helped shape this decision. if you look over in the far east you can see in oceania you have 9 million. up into asia about 130 million. 185 million in africa. and 285 million in europe which is always the place that has produced the popes. but look at the new reality today. here is north america, basically talking about the united states and canada here, 85 million catholics here. but this is the powerhouse. this is the powerhouse. latin america, 501 million catholics there. as you pointed out, wolf, that is almost half of the world's catholic population. if this were a democracy, absolutely this group would rule especially when you consider that one-third of the north american catholics al
