cnn's tom foreman is here to tell us more about this hearing. is there only one witness, tom?rter: she's the only one that matters because this is a chance for house republicans to take shots at her for the whole issue of funding for planned parentho parenthood. it's also clear she's ready to take some shots right back. important to remember in all of this, carol, the fundamental debate is not supposed to be about the broad question of abortion and whether people are for it or against it in this country. it is supposed to be specifically about the question raised by these videos, which is did planned parenthood sell parts of fetuses for a profit, which would be breaking the law. did they alter any procedures some way in the abortion process to get better samples, in a sense, for research people out there. is that what happened? the people who made these videos say it proves they did. other people have watched them, including planned parenthood, saying, no, it absolutely does not prove it. that's the fundamental question. if that was the practice, then congress might have reaso

tom foreman is "outfront" tonight. what does it look like there?s like there are any number of ways the suspects could have escaped. >> reporter: they say it occurred in an industrial area. it took two minutes for officers to respond when they thought something was wrong. where would they be 36 hours later? first possibility, in the area. remember, this is a community bounded on several sides by water. there are a lot of houses, plenty of places where they might hide whether they stay together or split up. second possibility, maybe they obtained a vehicle and drove out. now, if it was a boat, for example, they have a problem -- they don't have a problem. if you get on a boat, you can move through all sorts of lakes and rivers up here, about 500 miles of coastline, ten different lakes. it's a heavily trafficked area by recreational boaters. one boat more or less would not stand out. if it's a matter of them driving a car, that's a different matter. look at this. yeah, milwaukee is up here, about an hour and a half away. chicago, down here, about an

we have tasked tom foreman to look into this for us. lk to me about where he's heading and when. >> brooke e, he is heading into a part of the country where in these three metroplexes there are 36 million people and these are traditionally, as you just noted, in the top ten of the gridlocked areas of the country. as he heads into d.c., for example, he's going to be heading sbo an area that has about 600,000 regular residents, but about a million people who come in every day. they are putting up new cell phone towers. they have a 14-page list of road closures for people to deal with as they try to navigate all of this around these big events. look at the areas that are going to become no-go zones during the po pope's visit. this is around the white house and the basilica. he has big events in all these areas that will shut down massive parts of the city while that is happening before he heads out. and important to note here, there will be two sold out concerts in the middle of this by ed sheeran and a a three-night home standby the washin

for more on the unique challenges that pope francis presents, we're joined by tom foreman.e talked how hard this would be for security teams. today it showed some of the reasons why. >> absolutely. this all looked seamless and calm but there were undeniable moments where security agents were scrambling to maintain position and keep the pope safe from the sea of people. while you see pictures like this from the white house where it all seems calm, this is what was going on not from from there. these security gates opened at 4:00 in the morning trying to go through this massive screening of everybody around the pontiff. same thing when he rode out around the white house. we saw pictures like this, thousands of smiling faces, waving hands. look down the street here. look at the huge presence of vehicles around the pope to keep people back. look at the number of officers here. they're not just covering a quick movement from a vehicle into the building. every time he moved he was exposed for many long minutes to tens of thousands of people, both here and later at the basilica. i

. >> and tom foreman, excellent explanation, and the stage is set, and the candidates are making thel preparation forgs debate. let's talk about how the candidates are getting ready to talk about what may be taking place. joining us is a former debate preparation manager for president barack obama and also kevin madden who was the debate manager for mitt romney, and so, tell us, now, what do you see going into the debate tomorrow night? >> well, with the primary debate where there are many, many debates and many, many propositions, and i think that when senator obama was running in 2007, he found that getting ready for the multiple candidates debates one of the most frustrating and difficult things in the experience, and participating was more frustrating, and you have a a two opportunities, and grand total of four minutes, and you don't know how it is going to go and what the flow is going to b and the preparation is largely coming into the segues of what you want to say, and selecting the the three or four sentences in hoping that you will score. >> and a key issue, and let me brin

tom foreman joins me with a closer look at numbers. what can you tell us?linton is the pick for democratic women. 41% in favor, if you add the numbers up collectively, they go to 43% meaning now more democrats want someone other than hillary clinton than want hillary clinton, even though they are divided. this is a huge change. if you move along the way here to august, look at the numbers here. 52% wanted her back then. clear majority. go to july, it gets even bigger down here, 65% wanted her and before that, 66%. you see the trend here. this was considered a locked line for her fans and the line has gone down and down and down. this is something no candidate wants to see. >> much of the bids are predicated on the idea she would have ground swell of support by women. >> so much is based on that and why, why have they gone away? no silver bullet but this clearly has something to do with it. question of trustworthiness, which the clinton people hate but hangs over the campaign. we asked all the women in this poll, was clinton wrong to use her personal e-mail

cnn's tom foreman joins us with the big picture. >> let's look at the geography of this place. it takes a difference. it's up here to the north and west a little bit of chicago. probably take about an hour and a half to drive there. there are some geographic advantages for authorities here as they try to track them down. this is one of the chief ones here. everything outside this line is water. so it's all water out there. you see how they started by having them at least somewhat hemmed in, depending on what you said earlier about how quickly they responded. then as you move into the site, you can see the other boundaries that exist here and the other challenges. almost all of this in this area is residential up in here. and it's residential over here and down here and so on, around we go. so that's a problem in the sense that if they get out into here, there are many places for them to hide in houses and garages. many places where they could be out here. but we've noticed all day that they have remained focused very much on the central marshy area here. remember, this road rig

tom foreman has more for you. >> reporter: what a difference a debate makes.e the last debate, if you had measured the strength in the polls of all these candidates by height, this is how they would have stacked up. yes, donald trump was in the lead, but not by a whole lot over jeb bush or scott walker. and everybody was kind of in the game here. everyone thought, at least many people did, that that debate would cut trump down to size. but look what happened after that debate. he rose even higher. so much so that even bush, for example, did not really change position much. he fell relatively further behind. and now as we go into this debate, look where they stand now. trump has taken off. 32%. he is towering above this field. everyone else is stuck down here at the bottom except for ben carson, the only candidate who's even threatening to rise into that stratosphere. the key issue here is one factor. back in june, donald trump's favorability rating was terrible. he was down around 20%, and more republican voters really disliked him. he has completely reversed

i want to begin with tom foreman to show us obviously the question, this is what ash carter was sort ddressing, are the russian strikes anywhere near the rebel-controlled areas, tom? >> what's a real clue here? we see video of the bombs being dropped, we see the reaction. how do you know in the chaos that is syria today who is being hit by it? and the real first clue has to come from basic geography. if you look at the russian presence in the country, where they're largely operating from over here, you can also see all of this sort of purple-pinkish area. that is under control of the assad regime. you know as long as you get over toward the far western edge, that's where they're in control. out here is where you see the other control. if you wanted to look where isis really has a lot of support, it's going to be out in this area. they have a lot of influence throughout, but here they're quite strong out in here. so you might expect the bombing to be over here. but when i say look at the g geograp geography, look at this. here's where the bombings are. the map sort of shifts here. but
