lance's contest with tom malinowski? >> the polls just closed at 8:00.nto the hotel ballroom of tom malinowski, the democratic challenger. ford, this was a close race most of the season coming into this. most of the democrats we have spoken to said this race is critical. they saw this as a very vulnerable district. republican incumbent leonard lance has been in office since 2009. his margin of victory in past elections has been narrow enough the democrats that they could take it. given the amount of unaffiliated voters as the polling we saw with democratic and republican voters, there is a chance tom malinowski may have made inroads. we have not gotten any official word from campaign officials here on site, but it will come down to whether an of people turned out, not just the republican or democratic party, 40% of of democratic -- voters unaffiliated with either party. david: leonard lance has almost had a millstone against his neck for some time, fighting against his party, but mr. malinowski spent a lot of time outside his district, didn't he? >> yes.

one of those was the 7th congressional district in newjersey, where democrat tom malinowski unseatede. nada tawfik was there. well, newjersey really reflected what we have seen play out on a national scale where democrats really won in suburbs and urban areas. and in newjersey in particular, it really was a dissatisfaction with president trump that drew democrats and also moderate republicans to vote democrat. so for example in one district, newjersey‘s seventh district, leonard lance was in one of the districts that went for hillary clinton. he was a moderate republican who tried to campaign by saying he was bipartisan, but that wasn't enough for voters in that district, who felt that he didn't do enough to really rein in president trump. so he lost there. and democrats picked up three seats from republicans here alone. one of the contests is still a very competitive race, but it really reflects this dissatisfaction with president trump. and we also saw in newjersey the fact that women, political newcomers, a new wave of people being politically engaged, were pressing here in newjer

bipartisan, independent, and the anti—trump backlash was too much, so he lost to the democrat tom malinowskits who wanted to pick up republican district here. president trump has called it a tremendous success. what's your analysis of that? well, president trump is certainly trying to show that his campaigning over the end of days in this race really helped republicans in the senate, and they did pick up extra seats. so certainly on one sense you could say that the republicans did have a big success. on the other hand, the democrats have control of the house. and if you look at newjersey and other metropolis areas, cities, you see in these suburban areas the democrats really got a foothold with women, with moderates, who rejected the president, who don't find him palatable. on the other hand the rural areas went for president trump still so it shows the nation is still so it shows the nation is still very divided in that sense. thank you very much. we will have more analysis from those us midterms throughout the programme for you this morning, and there will be continuous coverage crossed th
