i'm tori campbell. hazmat was called to the building on 43rd avenue and clement after a body was found and that's where we find david stevenson. good afternoon, david. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. the situation here began at about 8:50 this morning at the peach colored building behind me. 8:50 is when police responded to a well-being check for a resident. police found a deceased male and firefighters responding to the scene, then called in a hazardous materials team because of concern over certain chemicals in the second-story apartment. here's the view from newschopper2 today. the situation prompted the situation of about a dozen people from the building we're told by police. they've been allowed back in in the last hour and we have seen hazmat crew members removing their gear in the last 20 minutes or so. their truck has pulled away. you can still see there is a police presence and a fire department presence as well. there's still a lot of questions at this hour, including what chemicals specific

i'm tori campbell. we're learning more about a half moon bay teenager who was shot to death by a sheriff's deputy last night. ktvu's alex savidge is live this afternoon with what relatives say led up to the gunfire. alex? >> reporter: well, good afternoon. according to relatives, this young woman's family called 911 last night because she -- they say this young woman hadn't been taking her medication according to a couple of relatives. she suffered from depression. this teen lives in this house behind us. this is where deputies came last night and they do say this teenager was armed when deputies got here. according to relatives, the girl was the teenager shot to death by san mateo county deputies during a confrontation in this complex. it happened before 9:30. this is the moonridge housing complex on mira mon te road. they say she had a knife when deputies came here. sheriff's investigators have not said what prompted the deputy to open fire, only that he feared for his life. the teenager's cousin told

good afternoon i'm tori campbell. sal castaneda is live at the toll plaza with the quick response to what was a pretty frightening sight for commuters, good afternoon sal. >> reporter: good afternoon, now chp did not tell us that the man set his own truck on fire but witnesses sure did. they took pictures. apparently the man got off his on the bridge and torched him own truck. this is what's left of the pickup after witnesses say a man set it on fire. a man in the pickup truck was reported unresponsive and blocking a lane. witnesses say the man dressed in a dark shirt and camouflage pants got out of the truck and was seen running through several lanes with a gas can. soon the white ford pickup truck was on fire. several lanes were blocked. and the man had been detained by a homeland security officer. >> he was able to detain the driver of the vehicle. our officers were on scene shortly after that and assisted him with getting him to the shoulder. >> news chopper 2 was over head when medics strapped him to the gurney.

i'm tori campbell. tara moriarty just spoke to an eyewitness and joins us live from the scene of the crash. tara? >> reporter: well, things are back to normal here at the fifth street offramp but that's only after the chp had to shut it down for six hours because of that fiery crash. flames could be seen from the freeway above when the speeding convertible flipped and landed before fifth and harrison street. the two people inside were instantly killed. and this all began as the chp chase around 3:00 this morning in oakland. officers noticed the stolen bmw out of san francisco heading northbound on 880 before the macarthur maze. a witness shared her cell phone video of the pursuit across the bay bridge which reached excessive speeds. >> they were probably going 100. i actually saw the flames and smelt them. it -- i was over the freeway where it caught on fire. >> reporter: the chp says the officers are trained to handle high-speed chases and even practice on a racetrack. >> a pursuit is -- it's very inte

i'm tori campbell. we begin with developing news in a deadly school shooting in a portland, oregon suburb. police in troutdale oregon say one student is dead as well as the gunman at reynolds high school. the shots were first reported just after 8:00 this morning. police put the school on lockdown as they searched for the shooter room by room. investigators say the victim was a teenaged male. there's been no information on the shooter or how that person died. police told terrified parents to go to a nearby parking lot until they could reunite with their children. >> we just saw people running everywhere, like people screaming. we didn't know what was going on. we just all went to the back of the chas room. we're all -- classroom. we're all scared. >> police don't believe there are no other victims. they've not completed their search. this shooting comes one day before the end of the school year. >>> a mother in custody as well as another man for the death of a father. there was an amber alert for the th

i'm tori campbell. another trial tied to the 2009 deadly b.a.r.t. police shooting of unarmed passenger oscar grant is now underway in san francisco. ktvu's tara moriarty has been in court all morning and joins us live as the former b.a.r.t. officer at the center of the case gets ready to testify. >> reporter: that's right. any minute, johannes mehserle is expected to take the stand. first up, we heard from the b.a.r.t. train operator who was there the day that oscar grant was shot and killed and then up right now is actually oscar grant's best friend. mehserle entered the courtroom early this morning. he did appear to have gained some weight since the last time that we saw him in court. we did not see him go into court. we did see his attorney, however. now, mehserle is wearing a suit. he has appeared very calm in the courtroom. grant's father, on the other hand, who filed this civil lawsuit, he's also wearing a suit, he's been very fidgety in court. grant's attorney must prove his chient had a relationship with his son. his client was been in priso

i'm tori campbell. we begin with breaking news out of the south bay where firefighters in san jose are battling a fire at kelley park near senter. we're live near the scene. >> reporter: good afternoon. i just spoke with the fire captain. nearly 50 firefighters are on scene battling this fire. so far, it's not yet contained -- it's not yet contained. they anticipate being hear for several more hours to fight the fire. a call came in around 0:45 of a car on fire. firefighters could see the smoke. so they sent several cars. they saw the car fire spread into the grass. it's a three-alarm fire. the california department of forestry, san jose fire is out here. right now, a helicopter is doing airdrops to put this fire out. so far, it has burned an estimated 1 to 2 acres. we're talking about heavy brush. luckily, the weather is on their side with cool temperatures. it's about 75 degrees. they say this is a slow-moving fire. not wind-driven. they are dealing with flat terrain. the problem is getting resources

i'm tori campbell. we begin with developing news in san jose. two children were found at a home where federal agents also discovered a large drug operation this morning. ktvu's janine de la vega is live in san jose where officials just finished a news conference. good afternoon, janine. >> reporter: good afternoon. police have 20th street here blocked off at julian because federal agents are inside a home here they say was a drug lab, where crystal meth was being produced. they are calling it a sizable operation. at 7:15 this morning, agents from the department of homeland security and the drug enforcement administration served a search warrant on the home because they received information that drugs were being manufactured at the home. they detained two adults and two young children who were inside. they found large quantities of crystal methamphetamine. a hazard out materials team came and swept the house because of the dangerous chemicals inside. >> the size and scope of the lab is yet to be determined. there's a large amount of methamphetami

tori, three people were killed. almost 200 others were hurt. ktvu's kyla campbell is live in washington where the meeting is being held. give us an idea of what may come out in the report, kyla. >> reporter: well, dave and tori, the investigator in charge already listed a host the safety problems found with this report, including flight path management, lack of pilot experience and the pilots not understanding the auto pilot systems. the investigators showed an animation that depicted the flight path and how the control settings look inside the cockpit at the time the pilots were landing and crashed. the investigators said the piloting improperly used the throttle and were warned by the plane they flying too low and slow to land safely but they were not able to recover. there was an opening statement about executing a visual approach on a clear day. that individual said the 777 is one of the mose sophisticated and automated planes. he said a rescue vehicle ran over a passenger. he said that should have never happened. >> nothing can replace the lost of your loved o
