good afternoon, paul. >> reporter: good afternoon, tori. i just got off the phone with the coroner's office. at this time, they've not released the identity of either victim in this case. i will tell you that the chp has given us new updated information. but first, we went up on the freeway ourselves. got a first-hand view and saw how badly damaged the cars were. so badly damaged, that the first responders could not give aid to either men. the two cars were mangled and barely recognizable. one, a bmw, the other a honda crv. just before 1:00 a.m., the bmw was traveling more than00 miles an hour northbound on 880 just south of the 5th avenue exit. when the 30-year-old alameda man lost control of his vehicle and hit a big rig and caused the other vehicle to go airborne. >> they are going northbound on 880. it hit the big rig at an undetermined rate of speed. pretty fast. it jumped, the freeway, went over the center dividered and hit the vehicle head on. >> reporter: when the crash happened, it propelled both vehicles backward, killing both men

good afternoon, i'm tori campbell. how is this for timing -- on this day, in 1936, the bay bridge opened to traffic. now, 77 years later, workers are bringing part of it down. happening now, the work has begun to get rid of the long- standing bridge. alex savidge got a closeup look at the work and joins us live. good afternoon, alex. >> reporter: good afternoon. i'm standing on the lower deck of the old eastern span. right now, up above us, there are crews busy at work and they are tearing apart a portion of the upper deck. while there's a lot of heavy machinery busy and working up there on the upper deck, drivers coming across the new bay bridge probably won't even notice what's going on. caltrans led a tour on the old eastern span of the bay bridge, where crews have started dismantling the 14-long foot section of roadway. jack hammers, saws and excavators are removing concrete and rebar. this portion of the upper deck is between the two steel peaks. the work will take six weeks to complete. as they tear this apart, i
