heard a lot about the sanctuary city policy and how an illegal immigrant was released on the street. senator feinstein repremended the sheriff. >> reporter: they had tough words as they have opposing interpretations of what this ordnance means. mayor ed lee insists that the sanctuary city ordnance does allow the sheriff to coordinate the release of a prisoner with federal authorities or ice. but the sheriff is demanding that they bring a court order or a warrant for such prisoners before the jail will hand them over to the feds. >> there is nothing that prevented them from picking up the phone and letting them know you gave us, you brought back to our jurisdiction a multifelony serious offender and we are about to release. >> for the mayor to come out swinging like this is the fact that the mayor is backing away from the law he supported and he is looking for a scapegoat. that is typical for this mayor. >> he is saying it is one thing to follow the ordnance. but another thing to pick up the phone and let him know this guy is there. >> he is speaking out of both sides of his mouth. what is the point of the ordnance when it stipulates how law enforcement
