. >> tracie potts joins us live now from capitol hill. tracie, a number of the proposals in the gop tax plan will benefit the wealthier people in our country. but apparently at a rally in indiana, president trump touted benefits for the middle class. what is that about? >> a couple of things, eun. first of all, he said it will be simpler to file your taxes. then want to do it on a postcard as opposed to the complicated 1040 that a lot of people use. he says that the taxes that many middle class families will be paying will be lower because they're doubling the standard deduction and expanding the child tax credits that a lot of families take advantage of. the concern of democrats is that lower tax and the highest in the wealthy comes down. more taxes for the middle class according to the tax bracket. but supporters of this say it's going to be offset by some of the other deductions, including the standard deductions like for your home interest and charities that stay i. it's a numbers game. now republicans have to fill in the blanks to exp

tracie potts is on capitol hill with more. where do things stand on this bill? >> still up in the air. they don't know if they'll have the votes. the top republican on the senate side here. here's where we stand. dozens of times they tried to repeal the affordable care act unsuccessfully so far. the rules are now changing. after next week, it becomes harder. instead of a simple majority, 50 plus one to get this done. they have to get some democrats on board after next week, which is very unlikely to happen. so the big push is next week. the bilk referred to by the names of the sponsors, would repeal major parts of th obamacare. it would scale back significantly funding for medicaid and that is what a lot of states or several states, including some republican states are objecting to the we'll see what happens with that next week. we don't know. but they're racing to get the votes to get this done. after next saturday, the process becomes a lot harder if not impossible. >> tracie potts live on capitol hill for us. thank you. >>> two african-american workers have f

tracie potts is live on the hill with more on the other issues that congress will also be tackling. tracie? >> good morning. lots of people concerned about the budget shutdown negotiations. lawmakers insist they won't shut down the government. president trump has said if his wall is not funded it should or could shut down. we'll be whi not to mention if the debt ceiling, we hit the debt ceiling, the u.s. can't borrow more money to pay bills, there's the possibility of default. beyond all of that, children's health insurance known as the chip program, that's got to be reauthorized. so does the faa. national flood insurance, which is $25 billion in debt, runs out at the end of september. all three of those big have to be reauthorized. now congress has to look at emergency funding for victims of hurricane harvey. the flooding, the damage from the hurricane itself in louisiana and texas. money is already being planned to be shifted within fema to start that process. but they need a lot more. back to you. >> tracie potts on the hill this morning. thank you. >>> federal employees will rece

tracie potts live on capitol hill with how congress is reacting to the president's controversial decisionn this. tracie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, everyone. do they want to get it done, democrats and republicans say yes, they want to find a way for young people brought here illegally to stay in this country. they were brought here as children. but can they get it done. we've seen them try a before, over and over, to do something on immigration. part of the key seems to be can they stick to just this one issue or will they try to pull in other things like funding for the border wall that could bring things to a screeching halt with a limited amount of time. also important to note, one of the rules is that people were coming under daca, have one month now to apply to extend their status two years, it is a rolling phase out. it means they're going to try to squeeze 800,000 potential recipients, immigrants into this system in the course of a month. it could be a big crunch, trying to get statuses updated. >> tracie potts, live on capitol hill. thank you. >>> 11 before the hour.

news 4's tracie potts is live on capitol hill.ings stand on coming up with a bill for the tax cut? >> reporter: well, they're talking but they're talking about different things right now. democrats want be to focus on health care. the president wants to focus on taxes. today he's bringing in another bipartisan group, democrats and republicans. actually, more democrats in this one. this group calls themselves the problem solvers. they're trying to figure out a way to put together tax reform, which the president wants to do, and an infrastructure bill building up our roads, bridges, other types of infrastructure in the u.s. to see if they can cooperate on that. there's a lot of talking going on. there are different parts. the president has an idea, he wants to focus on lowering coto rate tax rates. and then the democrats are focusing on health care like he's unveiling for a single payer system that hasn't gotten a lot of support from democrats but today he's giving out the details. we understand he has more democrats signing on to t

news 4's tracie potts joins us live from capitol hill. >> tracie, as far as the proposals, they benefit wealthier folks. in indiana, the president talked about the benefit to the middle class, too. tell us about that. >> he said first of all, it will be easier to file with a postcard as opposed to a long 1040 even online. also, the tax brackets are changing. democrats point out that the top tax bracket for wealthier americans is coming down while the lowest one is going up a bit from 10 to 12%. the government says that would be offset because the deduction would be doubled twice as much. plus, more benefits as you noticed for families with children. the biggest benefit that they're touting here is that huge drop in the corporate tax rate, sort of a trickle down theory here that businesses with more cash would be able to expand and provide more jobs, more gross overall for the country. that's the big picture. what we don't have are the numbers, the details. how much money do you have to make to pay 10 or 12% under this new plan. that could be part of what republicans have to fill in as n
