[ laughter ] >>> new reports reveal a history of complaints from residents where a balcony collapsed in berkeley. we'll have the details. >> and the controversial flag debate extends to the bay area. what residents in that neighborhood are saying. >> 5:29. looking ahead to your afternoon forecast, triple digits. we'll show you exactly where. >> and it's beginning to back up at the bay bay. the metering lights are still off. i'll have a complete look at your thursday drive into few minutes. >>> good morning. it's thursday, june 25. i'm maria medina. >> hi, everyone. i'm frank mallicoat. with the state facing a bad fire season officials are already on high alert. kiet do is at cal fire headquarters in morgan hill with the latest. kiet. >> reporter: yes, good morning. all fires point to what could be a horrific fire season this year so cal fire has banned all outdoor residential burning in its jurisdiction including alameda, contra costa and santa clara counties. what this means is that homeowners must now find another way to get rid of yard trimmings besides burning it. they are recommending you use a chipper or go to a recycle center. cal fire is also asking residence to clear 100 feet around their home and trim trees. no branches below six feet on flat ground. on a slope, all branches below 10 feet. it makes it harder for fire to spread. normally cal fire responds to 650 fires this time of the year. this year the number is already doubled. one state official had strong words to all californians. >> don't do anything stupid! and so, we have to reiterate that. that is the message. don't do anything stupid. >> as for campfires, do not worry. campfires on private property or in campgrounds are still okay for now. live at cal fire headquarters in morgan hill, kiet do, kpix 5. >>> a wildfire in antioch forced evacuations yesterday afternoon from more than 100 homes. at one point the flames burned dangerously close to those homes before firefighters beat them back. the fire burned more than 500 acres and hills surrounding two parks. contra loma regional park and black diamond regional preserve. firefighters now have the upper hand with containment of at least 80%. kpix 5's anne makovec is on grimsby drive in antioch where evacuations orders are now lifted. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. you can still smell a lot of smoke here in the air in this neighborhood. you can see from the blackened hill there behind me, just how close this wildfire came to several of the homes. the fire is contained though. the evacuations have been lifted. for a while, even as the fire raged near contra loma regional park the people of grimsby drive thought they were safe until suddenly, they weren't. as the wind whipped the fire into a frenzy, residents were told to get out fast and they did grabbing everything they could cram into backpacks and trucks. >> get everything i possibly can childhood memory, pictures, photos. >> reporter: and once they got out all they could do was stand and watch. >> have you ever wondered what it's like to watch your life go up in flames? >> reporter: in the hills firefighters were scrambling to stop a flare-up that came too close for comfort. >> we had homes that were within 10, 15 feet of the fire front. so we had firefighters in between where the homes were and the advancing fire. so it was very close. >> reporter: courtney white side's home may have come the closest to burning. >> my backyard is black. >> reporter: when the flames faded and the smoke had settled, not one home had been touched by fire. >> thank god my house is still there. i'm going to go kiss each and every one of of these firefighters when we're done here. >> reporter: and there are still some hot spots smokeddering this morning. so firefighters are making sure none of those gets out of control. the next step is going to be to determine the cause. right now firefighters say they have no idea. live in antioch anne makevoc, kpix 5. >>> okay, anne, thanks. good day to get air- conditioners primed and ready to crank because it's going to be a hot one today, right?
