when you think about trayvon martin, trayvon martinned had at seed departments in emmett hill, the 14-year-old black boy who was asassanid it in mist -- assassinated for allegedly violating racial etiquette and speaking to a white woman. his body was placed in the river with the cotton gin fan belt tied around his neck. was shown in jet magazine, and that spurred the nation to look at the price of white supremacy on our democracy. we think about 1963. 1963 is the year of birmingham, and the year that dr. king writes his famous letter from a birmingham jail, and in the letter he says the activism going on in birmingham and the young women and men who are being rainfalled, sometimes as young as eight, nine, ten years old, are taking this nation back to the great wells of democracy that were dug deep by the founding fathers. king was being too kind because this country is founded on racial slavery. a conversation that we still have not had. but 50 years ago, with the march on washington provided was a litmus test for american democracy. when king speaks at the march on wednesday august,

so much of this is reminiscent of the trayvon martin case. hand on the gun, even a punch to the nose. a bunch to george zimmerman's nose in the trayvon martin case was so central. ultimately this is a domestic violence call. even though shellie zimmerman does not want to press charges, they may anyway since there's a witness as she says there is. this may just be the beginning. >> marcia clark, the fact that he according to what his wife says on the 911 tape says he's threatening with the gun, he keeps putting his hand on the gun. what do you get souout of that? >> that's threatening conduct. potential assault with a deadly weapon. if the words and other actions accompany it to show he has the intent to inflict serious bodily injury or use the firearm, then that's an assault. you don't have to touch someone to be guilty of assault with a deadly weapon. it doesn't sound it went that far. i can't tell exactly. and the fact she doesn't want to press charges is not helpful to the case. but lisa's right. we don't especially in los angeles, we don'

during the trayvon martin case, again, as ms.patterson said, there wasn't a stand your ground defense asserted but instructions were given, etc., and the jury testified and made statements afterwards they did consider the stand your ground. but it's interesting that no one talked about trayvon martin's right to stand his ground. george zimmerman apparently, you know, followed him and did all these things. then he was attacked and they got into an altercation. but at that point -- and if you were walking around and if someone was following you and approached you, maybe you want to defend yourself. but it's never been considered that trayvon martin might have had a right to stand his ground. these laws, we believe, allow kind of like a bully law. i can bully you and when you want to defend yourself, i can say i'm so afraid, i think you're going to hurt me so i'm going to kill you. it's just totally wrong. communities of color, particularly african-americans as ms. patterson pointed out, are disproportionately affected by these laws

all of us were riveted on the trayvon martin case. we were heartbroken and angry and upset and the implication and connections and racial impact is why we are here today. when i come to speak at events like this, i feel very privilege because i feel like i get to be in rooms where a lot of my community are not. i get to tell you things you're probably not going to get here-- hear in polite conversation. as i was thinking about this today, that is what i really want to do, touch your hearts and minds and activate you all in your continued effort to do something about the standard ground laws. a researcher, who is a senior fellow at the justice policy center at the urban institute, released a report last july. here are the statistics on stand your ground states. as i was rehearsing my remarks to myself to make sure i did not run over time, i found myself pounding on my desk with anger. you will understand why. in homicides where the shooter is white and the victim is black, it is found to be justified in 17% of the cases. white shooter,

after george zimmerman was acquitted of all charges in the shooting death of trayvon martin, includingecond-degree murder, the national urban league took a comprehensive look at stand your ground laws. states with standard your ground laws have seen a 53% increase in justifiable homicide while at the same time states without stand your ground laws had their rates of homicides decreased by 5%. it's justifiable homicide rose 200%. trayvon martin's mother, sybrina fulton was one of the witnesses set to testify in the stand your ground hearings. and a florida man also claiming he did nit self-defense has not been widely recorded. he opened fire on a group of teenagers in the vehicle next to him after a dispute about their music being too loud. from where i was sitting, a shotgun was coming at me. he ordered a pizza with his girlfriend, it wasn't until he turned on the tv the following morning he discovered he had killed 17-year-old jordan davis. legal observers expect him to use the stand your ground defense law in his trial which is now set for february. thank you so much for joining us i
