i first arrived in trinidad in 1913.came at the request of the miners who asked for my help in the struggle against john d. rockefeller as colorado fuel and iron works based in pueblo. the mine condition working were horrible. with my encouragement 8,000 miners went on strike for basic demands. as can be expected, violence erupted shortly therefore in the coal fields so the state's governor called out the militia. the militia under general chase was not neutral and when they arrived in trinidad, the general immediately ordered me out of the state. so, i had to go. and then i promptly came right back and when i did the general had me placed under military confinement in trinidad where i stayed for a number of weeks. and then he threw me into a rat-infested jail for several more weeks. all during this time, 11,000 miners statewide heeded the call to go on strike. and colorado resembled a war zone with woeth sides armed and ready to shoot. when i finally got of jail, i was immediately summoned to washington to appear before
