also complicating this is that trisha, who was a democratic lawmaker, at the time, vocally supportive of abortion rights, she has changed her party position and become a republican. this is a move that stunned democrats, stunned staffers who have been speaking out against her, including other people working to get her elected, but she's sticking to this, and voted in favor of the new bill that would change the law to restricting abortion to 12 weeks. you have that going on, and we should remind folks when you look at public opinion on this issue, most americans, including most residents in north carolina, they are supportive of that 20-week abortion ban which is where they are right now, and they do not want to see it go down to 12 weeks. republicans, because they have the power until the state will likely make this changes. this is in some ways cementing what we see here, which is a new world after roe v. wade was overturned. you have red states really moving toward restrictions, purple states like north carolina, also moving toward north carolina. if republicans have the votes there

that is until a state representative named trisha cotham, who ran in and won as a pro-choice democratat least personally unexplained move, flipped her party affiliation, seemingly out of nowhere, to become a republican. she has said she felt too controlled by the democratic party. this is a woman who spoke movingly about her own abortion on the floor of the north carolina state house in 2015, when she was arguing against abortion restrictions. she even cosponsored a bill in january, four months ago, to codify abortion protections in her state. yesterday, that same woman you see their cast the deciding vote, in line with all of the republicans, to approve a 12 -week abortion ban. and ensure that even if governor cooper vetoes the bill, which he said he will, republicans can override the veto and make the ban law. jessica valencia's work has been essential in tracking the story of abortion rights in the post roe era. she's the author of the newsletter, abortion every day, where today, she published a story titled, texas is fabricating abortion data. we will talk about it in a second. sh

the reasons they were able to do this is because someone who was a democrat but flipped parties, trishasense of what is happening there? >> i have not, you know, i this year, because she was served previously and then came back this session. i literally have had one conversation with her one-on-one since january. she has kind of been apart from her caucus. i would say this entire year. so when she announced her changing to the republican party, a lot of us weren't surprised because she really hasn't been engaged with us this entire year. i will say that when we sponsor the codify roe bill earlier this year, that every single member of our caucus signed on to it. i did text her at the time and said i hope that you will sign on to this bill because i lead the charge on abortion and our caucus. she responded, yes, i will sign on. and she did. and that was only a few months ago. so to see somebody completely change all their values and what they stand for was extremely disappointing. and it is just devastating that one person's decision like that can affect millions of people in our state.
