what's the next thing tropicana. i walk over the bridge, i'm standing there trying to catch my breath and i hear somebody screaming again there's another shooter he's in the tropicana, get out. so we start running north again through the casino. that's where i see everybody's shoes, flip flops everywhere, clothing dropped, purses dropped. who knows how i got there. i end up at the mgm then i get a text from somebody saying there's an active shooter in the mgm. so everybody starts screaming get out of the mgm. so they ran up to the mgm -- i give them a lot of credit. they had a plan in place, they ran us into what's called the conference center, a building contiguous to the mgm. they think the shooter would stick with the main casino. i give mgm a lot of credit. we hid there in these little conference rooms. everybody is just hiding there. imagine there. and we're looking at these doors -- by the way, george. there are doors at the end of the conference center, i'm not blaming it on anybody, there's no police officers

so when tropicana came up for sale we grabbed it.ssume everybody comes up to you and says, "well, make pepsi taste differently," "make the frito-lay chip different." you get advice from people all the time and do you ever listen to it? they give me ideas on products, how our existing products taste and what new products we ought to be developing. they give me ideas and feedback on our commercials. they give me ideas for commercials, packaging. i get ideas for everything. the most important thing is to keep both ears open. because you never know if a nugget of an idea can actually translate to big success in the company. so one of the things i've learned is not to dismiss the ideas. i catalog all the ideas i get. then i send it out to my people saying, "hey, i listened to this group of people "talk about our products and this is what i heard. "is there something here? should we be doing something about it?" so i listen to everybody. you do all the testing or some of the testing yourself? one of the greatest things about my job is i ca

las vegas boulevard is shut down at tropicana and then southbound.d roughly four miles of highway has been shut down. and initially when we landed just a little over an hour ago it was just mandalay bay and since then, lux exxon, tropicana, excalibur, among hotels evacuated. and the way that the airport is positioned, there are a number of runways this kind of butt up to the mandalay bay property. so there were reports that when the gun fire initially broke out that people started then running over to the runways because it's that close to the airport. so just a lot of chaos. i'm not near the scene but -- talking about what they have heard and the hospital beds not being enough. primary hospital. that they're trying to find locations for additional 20 or 30 more people who are injured. and so, still just trying to ascertain exactly how much devastation there is here. >> yeah. that indeed. is there a -- talking to the control room here briefly. we see the video. is there audio as well, guys? it sounded as if you could kind of hear gunshots there. we'l

reporter: reports was there was a smoother at the tropicana. the same thing happened when we arrived at san bernardino. they said there were three shooters. people here echos, they hear different things. we have been told that's all been cleared. obviously they are going through a lot of these hotels. they have to go through it's a tedious process. there is still a lot of evidence to be gathered. but we are told they believe there is only one shooter and that short is down. incredibly sad news is the injuries numbers continue to go up and the death toll i believe will go up talking to the witnesses we have spoken to walk out with blood all over their bodies. some people were taken away in cars. people literally threw them in the back of suvs and drove them away. one of our interns was here with her family. they called me, she texted me, i called them, and there are 20 people hiding in the basement closet of the hooters hotel. they jumped in a car and drove there to get away. some of those booths within we spoke to one of the women runs those bo

so we're heading down tropicana, the opposite direction of the strip. at that time people were running across the road, loading up in pickup trucks to get away from the shooter and people were almost getting hit by ambulance and police heading toward the scene. at that time i ran across the street, hailed a cab and we were approached by a crowd of people. at that time i realized there was a lady limping and screaming for the cab. so i took them and said you can have my cab. the answer to your question, when i knew there was a shooter in mandalay bay was when i got in the taxicab. they all have dispatches and the cab told me at that time what happened. at that time i was finally relieved that i was far enough away from mandalay bay i wasn't getting shot at anymore. >> will you ever feel safe in your venue here again. >> absolutely. i'm in the business -- i'm in the night life business and i would not have a problem going to the another event in this town. you know, when we give in to these crazy people, they win, and we can't let them win. we have to liv

there are obviously the famous casinos, mgm, tropicana behind me. back at the tropicana, this building here, where we are, this active police scene where you see people combing the streets here, stretchers, ambulances, squad cars. at that point is at "playbopla y where the concert took place. victims on the ground told us basically they were at that concert, there were performers on stage. they were enjoying themselves and then heard what sounded like bursts and bursts and bursts. what they first believed to be -- as you said, a fess sieve scene, vegas strip. they thought they were fireworks. the performances continued until it was clear that those were gunshots. those people stampeded away from the location on to the vegas strip. as you imagine, the revelry never stopped here. you have a mass of people on the strip, a mass of people flooding from that location, trying to get away from the scene. police pushing in. this has been calm for the better part of an hour, just like that. police have a lock on it. they've pushed pedestrians out. we've seen

he's been on lockdown from tropicana for hours now. you were feet from the stage in the artist area when the shots began. what did you think when you first heard it all? >> i've heard this from a lot of people already, it sounded like fireworks. we'd been there for three days. this was the last act of our three-day festival. we thought it made sense that it was fireworks. but it was the first time, everybody thought that. the second time, people started to wonder what was going on. when we went outside, it was coming from up above, so somebody actually said, maybe they thought it was from the power lines, that something was going on. about the third time, people started to realize, you know, it was gunfire. we were right by the side of the stage. everybody started to dive under the artists' tour busses that were parked there. we were all underneath the busses for a while. then security at the venue, at route 91, all of a sudden started trying to get everybody up and moving. we had to actually cross right across the stage. that was our

that downtown section of the strip, particularly in the area of the mandalay bay casino and the tropicanaey are still considering this an active shooter situation. they do have certain areas blocked off and certain hotels on lockdown, but they're advising anyone who does not need to be out, do the no be out at the moment. >> the first moment that we heard, there might have been some casualties. the hospital there saying at least 20 people, and that number will go up. so let's set the scene right now. this was all taking place at a country music concert taking place in las vegas. our kenneth moten is just back from las vegas, is in los angeles. were you there over the weekend. this was a big concert. vegas was alive overnight. >> caller: kendis, it realliy was. there were literally thousands of people in the streets. some would say that's not out of the normal for las vegas. but over this weekend i saw that people were making their way to that concert. as you mentioned, it's a country music festival. so we actually saw people in country music traditional attire, cowboy boots, cowboy hats.

so e we took off to the tropicana hotel which was just next door. there was quite a crowd getting there. >> does your daughter have any sense of what happened? >> it's odd. i have discussed it with my friends already tonight and that everything is matter of fact. but she was amazing and so incredibly brave and not once did she cry or scream or ask what was going on. so i think she's going to be okay. just ab odd, unfortunate thing that happened to her. >> when you were there and decided you had an opportunity to run, is that because the gunshots had stopped for a few moments and you decided that that was the best courses of action? was everybody running? >> yes, the gunshots had stopped. there were still quite a few people under the bleachers there. some telling us to stay. i just had this instinct to get my daughter out of there. and thankfully everybody in the crowd was really great. and the second we were yelling out we had a baby, they all made room and let us through. it was pretty crazy. >> when you hear that the numbers have gone up in the pa

we got out of an entry gate and into the tropicana parking lot. at that point, a gentleman was in a very large truck. e we asked him if e we could get in his truck and e he told us no, get away. so we kept running again. and then we saw people going into the back-doors of the tropicana, so we headed that way. just as we were getting up there, we heard people screaming again, run, get out and they were shoving everybody back out into the parking lot. at that point, i grab bed ahold of becca again and said, come on, we have to keep going. and we came across the officer and his girlfriend. they were getting into their truck and she just begged him to please let us in. he said, yes, i'm an off duty officer. e he went to show her his badge, which at that point we didn't care if he had a badge or not. we just had to get out of there. he got us in the truck, we started driving away. he said we have to get off the strip. went straight -- we were staying at the plaza, but he said, no, you're come iing with us to the police station. they got us in there. st
