you're at ucsf and you're a demographer and you've done a lot of work looking at the reprod of accesson, access and the impact on people's lives. explain that. what does that mean? what is it that you do? >> yeah. so i started working on the topic of abortion about 50 years ago, and at the time, the real question that i was exploring was, does abortion hurt women? so we were there were this idea that abortion does hurt women, was used to justify laws that restrict access. and we really needed to know so many people have abortions in their lifetime that if it causes mental health harm, we need to know. so the important thing is to have a rigorous study design. compare people who got abortions to people who wanted them and couldn't get them and, you know, when we started the study, the important thing was that people who got the abortions, but now with the dobbs decision further restricting people's access to abortion, all of a sudden that group of people who wanted an abortion couldn't get one becomes extremely relevant for understanding what the potential impact of the end of roe vers

the one and a half mile swim helps fund cancer research at ucsf.wimmers form teams to raise money together. the biggest group is team susan survives. there are so many people that have joined over the years. there are even people that i don't really know that just sign up and join my team and it's really it's so i feel so honored that they want to be on team susan. when you hear her story, you'll understand why susan helmrich is a three time cancer survivor. she was diagnosed with vaginal cancer at 21 lung cancer at age 42, and pancreatic cancer at 53. each time i use swimming as a way to get better and to prove that i wasn't, i'm not done yet. that last diagnosis stopped her from doing the swim that year, but since then, every year she's in the water. i'll be 68 and i never thought i'd live this long. and so my story is inspiring because i think it gives people hope that a cancer diagnosis is not always a death sentence. it's terrible. treatment is terrible. getting through it is terrible. but you can come out the other end. her story pushing othe

after college what i did happen is-what happened was i landed a job at ucsf and was a research associate there. one day me and my co worker were talking and don't know how it came about, they talked about fire department and someone mentioned i would be good for the fire department. even though i didn't play much sports i was still athletic. fire department, what will i do in the fire department because i didn't know there were women on the engines and trucks and didn't know the difference between engine and truck. the same night i was watching tv and there was a commercial of the fire department recruiting women firefighter and there was a woman all dressed and tolds to go to division of training and 27 and a half year later i'm erhoo. when there is more presence of asian person, asian community it educates the population and helps people understand our community rchl ism i think people hate because they don't understand. i will tell the young women that definitely consider you know, a career in the fire service. don't just think it is just for men, because the fire service is not just
