ulta, which is one of the major outlets that sells e.l.f. product, ulta has said that this year, it's store sales should be -2% to 0%. you had l'oreal with a major warning, estee lauder with profit suffering. those two are blaming it largely on china, but the reality is, everybody else in the cosmetics space seems to be doing very poorly and e.l.f. is doing great. again, does number one prima fascia, that's a little suspicious, but when you look at it, these inventory numbers, they do not match imports. the other thing is, e.l.f., what was helpful to us, because we had to ask -- okay, did e.l.f. suddenly switch up at sourcing practices? does it have a third party now import its product? in fiscal q2, e.l.f. made an interesting disclosure, as this is when it's inventory first blew out. what we think happened was that e.l.f. had over ordered inventory, sales hit a wall, and should they were in q2 with all this inventory, and they came up with this excuse were they said, oh, what accounts for $36.9 million of this increase in inventory is, we j

ulta among the top performers, up more than 3%.k saying the inflection in beauty that the street expects next year, it is unlikely. joining me to discuss that and what to expect from holiday spending is dillon cardin, analyst at william blair. good to have you. why isn't the beauty surge coming in '25? >> jon, thanks for having me. i think what we -- it is a two-legged sort of thesis here. the first is in the more medium term if you look at other categories with bigger growth out of the pandemic, eyeglasses, pet, furniture, there is subsequent contraction has been about two years. beauty spent two years growing at 10%. the category that has been a midsingle digit grower. you just started seeing softness in the category around spring of this year. the estimates for ulta we think and effectively an inflection by the first quarter of next year, flat com, right down from low single digits in the back half of this year. i think taking a cue from some of the other sectors, it could be a little bit longer of a recovery, you know, even acc

so i went to target and perused the ulta aisles. i couldn't believe how much the stuff costs.but i did grow up in a cheap household. i found myself thinking you've got to be kidding me, they look exactly the same. so i bought the elf and i slathered it on. i asked my wife how it looked. she said terrific. the makeup was perfect. i figured she'd detect i wasn't using mac because that's what she uses. nope. she couldn't tell the difference. so i did a little experiment i went into her cosmetic cabinet her, voluminous cosmetic cabinet, and put my elf makeup in there label facing backward. she put some on not long afterwards, she didn't know the difference. i told her what i'd done and she didn't actually mind. i asked her what was the catch. she said elf's made in china. while there are certainly a lot of snobs who wouldn't want to use elf then there would be others who didn't care. turns out she was dead right. the customers are trading down like mad in this one particular category of cosmetics. like in so many other industries the big cosmetic companies have been raising prices
