just to get a sense, can i take a quick poll -- who are undergrads in the audience? and business school students? and members of the community? faculty? rate. -0- - great. we have an excellent and diverse audience. you will have a good dialogue, i imagine people are split on these issues. a couple things i will say -- the professor mentioned the op- ed i wrote about goldman sachs. everything i said i very much believe is true to the industry. i do not think -- goldman is a smart firm and excellent firm at what it does. i do not think it practices are very different to the industry more broadly. when i wrote the book and the op-ed, i was using my career there as a view of what i think has become conflicted in the industry. the second thing i would say, i think a lot of people would would want to classify my views or this talk as in the occupy wall street camp or a different type of camp. i would say, i am very much a capitalist. i just have the view that free markets imply that the playing field is fair and there aren't a lot of conflicts of interest. a big thesis of

we know today we are producing 40,000 computer science undergrads a year, according to bls. we need 120,000 a year. such as to give you a little bit of from our perspective of where the jobs are, also our cortex, 40% are not engineers. they're not computer science folks. so when you look at what microsoft needs, it's a lot of what the panelists have talked about and i would add one, team building skills and working within a team. we do everything by team at microsoft. easy can't work within a team under their how smart you are, or how fascinating -- you will not be successful at the end of the day. and so really important to look at what we're doing, not only at the college level but in high schools and all up and down the spectrum. we've only got nine states in the united states who represent, who actually look at computer science as a court agreed in high school. nine states. 41 states take computer science and look at it like jim. we have 42000 high schools in the united states. 2100 teach ap computer science. so it's certainly a a higher it issue but if we don't look at

about one element having to do with support for basic research from support for students at the undergrad level where we have not talked about for graduate education. you mentioned energy technology. energy tends to be -- there's any number of demonstration projects early in the things people can do, but it's the kind of activity that requires a degree of activity at scale and said that infrastructural support is very important than the federal government could do any number of things. one is simply to provide a safe harbor for corporate partners to come together, not unlike to bring them together with universities and create competitive research, including the plague research areas. to support shared infrastructure were smaller companies that need prototyping, some of the labs are providing major computational facilities to help companies that modeling and simulation to improve and begin to think about how to scale what they do. so it's kind of a daisy chain going from the fundamental research to creating safe harbors and partnerships that allow road months developed and people to move o
