i'd like to remind everybody that sexual assault is an underreported crime. as such, the department took steps to increase reporting, because each report allows us to provide care to a victim and an opportunity to hold an offender appropriately accountable. this year's 50 percent increase indicates to us that victims have greater confidence in the response system. while we see indications that our efforts over the last year-and-a-half are having an impact, it does not mean that we are satisfied with our progress. we will continue to encourage greater reporting while reducing the occurrence of this crime by improving our prevention measures. the department takes action in every case where it has jurisdiction and sufficient evidence to do so. this year, commanders had sufficient evidence to take disciplinary actions against 73 percent of alleged offenders. this is up from 66 percent from the prior year. this chart shows the historical trends of our sexual assault reporting in the department. it is important to note that each report consists of at least one mili

there's a tremendous amount of loss associated with underreporting and livesafe is solving that problem were shot three times and you're a frequent speaker of violence prevention and you have used your voice in an amazing way as i said. but when you think about the culture of the university and i think the fear of taking a stand sometimes, especially in sex assault situations, do you believe this will take off? i know your heart is in it but are you convinced other students will take this and know they can use it? >> absolutely, yes. i think one of the big things that changed at virginia tech is transparency. students are asking for it and parents are asking for it. we have college presidents calling and asking for it. they have to be more proactive, this is unfortunately a reality as we know day in and day out. not everyone will be an active shooting like what happened to us but sexual assaults and bullying and vandalism, all things we can address on a college campus. >> we're finding that colleges across the country are already using live safe and getting a ten times the number of tip

tracie, this is a story that i think is just terribly underreported. >> this is the shocking thing about this. it happened three weeks ago. these girls were missing for three weeks. take a look in d.c. and other areas, too, like new york and l.a. and even london. protests. people that want to bring more attention to these more than 200 missing girls who were snatched right out of their school and haven't been seen since. an islamic fundamentalest group believed to have taken these girls and possibly sold them into marriage, sold them as child brides and part of the protest has to do with the fact that some people don't think the nigerian government is doing enough to find these girls. just this morning we learned that a couple of protesters in nigeria protesting over this were arrested, allegedly, the president's wife said that she didn't, she thought this was an effort to make her husband look bad. he had taken a lot of heat for not doing more. you noted the united states, secretary of state john kerry now says if the u.s. is ready to help with intelligence, with forensic and with inves

provide a better measure of the problem, since sexual assault on college campuses is notoriously underreportedto a 2005 report, by the u.s. department of justice, 95% of campus sexual assaults are not reported. yesterday, i had a chance to speak with valerie jarrett, senior adviser to the president, just hours after the white house released their recommendations on how to combat sexual assault on college campuses. joining me now, valle jarrett, senior adviser to president barack obama. valerie, what was it that prompted the creation of this task force and the report that came out today? >> well, as the president said when he announced the task force, there's more that we can do to end sexual violence on our campuses. one in five women are sexually assaulted while in college and more often than not, it happens their freshman or sophomore years. so there's still more work to do, and the president was determined that the federal government, in partnership with stakeholders around the country, should work together to come up with a series of recommendations, and that's what we announced today. >>
