in the end, free and fair union elections became their biggest fear. a free and fair election became their biggest fear. if volkswagen wouldn't scuttle these elections, they would. on the eve, they launched their assault. a barage of untrue statements, the kind we see from union busters all the time to scare and intimidate and bully and to bully and bully hard, working ought oove plant workers into rejecting the union. one of these third parties, an elected official, went to the press on the first day of the voting, the first day that the workers had a chance to vote and he said, he had been quote, assured," if the workers voted against the union, they would launch a new line of the s.u.v.s. this led to a press frenzy, banner and barage of reporters a said they were on the line with this vote. never mind that the company denied it and the elected official's claim wasn't true. he said he had been been assured and i would like to yield to the gentleman from from wisconsin. >> i thank my friend from california. mr. pocan: volkswagen put out a formal denia

the nlrb has thrown out unionization elections and did a new one because the atmosphere is too tainted. >> i've had officials tell me they've never seen anything like this before. let me ask you a professional reporter, have you ever seen or reported in the past on a sitting united states senator injected himself into a vote like this? >> i've been covering this beat for a long time. i've never seen a politician or lawmaker inject himself like corker did. his timing was brilliant. he caught the union somewhat flat footed and the union was somewhat slow to respond. >> the uaw told me he made a special trip back to tennessee. they had signed an agreement with volkswagen there wouldn't be any negative statements coming from either side. i think it is very clear for the table is set for the national labor relations board to inject themselves in this and throw this vote out and go through this process again. your thoughts. >> the union lost pretty narrowly by 86 votes. i interviewed one of the nation's leading experts at berkeley. he said corker's comments, haslem's comments, watson's comme

unions to take from it? >> i think people are making more of this loss than they should. it was a close election.a surprising loss given that this was as we see in many campaigns a campaign where a union went in expecting to have neutrality and ended up with an opposition campaign, a fairly aggressive opposition campaign, not from the employer but from political figures and the business committee, business community that was, in effect, the same as an employer opposition campaign. the problem was the union didn't run the kind of campaign that is needed when you have opposition. >> all right, let me get linda clave easy first to comment on what do you take from what happened in chattanooga? >> well, i think it was not surprising. i think miss bron february bren certificate right about that. what is not surprising about it is that we had seen a very precipitous decline of union membership across the country in the last 60 years. it's down to less than 7% of non-- of private sector workers are in unions. and the union movement would be almost dead if it were not for public employee unions. so it was
