today's katherine creag is in union square with this. you've had a report from several of these scenes in the past few weeks where pedestrians have been struck. >> reporter: indeed, michael. the last week and a half there have been so many fatal collisions involving pedestrians and something drivers should be aware of. police officers, patrol cars, all around new york city. it's an enforcement under way to keep pedestrians safer and drivers in check. there is an increase in police officers and the number on patrol to enforce safe driving. they will look for those speeding, distracted and double parking. it will last through november 22nd for now, possibly even longer. the fatal hit and run of a 33-year-old man in september of last year and it took place in union square, it really drew attention to the problem of dangerous driving. the hit and run happened on fiftd avenue in september of last year. a suspect was arrested days later andle vision enforcement is happening across the city in all five boroughs. side streets but the highways as

hospital in critical condition this morning three days after a tour bus crashed in san francisco's union square. the double tech oh tour bus was speeding when it lost control hitting a bicyclist, two pedestrians and several cars before slamming into scaffolding at a construction site there. 30 people were on board that bus when it crashed, 20 injured. police are looking into whether mechanical failure was involved. the owner of the bus, sightseeing san francisco, released a statement. deeply saddened by the crash and that it is cooperating with investigators. >>> starting today, muni riders will be able to pay for their fares with a smartphone. it's through a free new app called muni mobile. to use it, riders will have to set up an account. they will be able to buy a mobile tickets, which will be activated once they boarded a bus, light rail or cable car. the app is an 18 month experiment. san francisco transit officials say they hope this test run will help them improve future versions of the app. >>> 407 is the time right now. a deadly dog mauling case is back in the spotlight. coming up in 2

spoke to firefighters who say that the jaws of life failed during the recent tour bus crash in union square and now firefighters say that they want their chief and the mayor to do something about it. they're called the jaws of life. but according to the san francisco fire departments obtained by ktvu, the jaws from three different trucks froze up during the union square bus crash november 13. >> we've been aware that the tools are becoming jut dated for a good ten years. >> reporter: the assistant chief was the incident commander for union square that the cutters failed. so crews used saws to extricate seven people trapped, including a 15-year-old girl pinned underneath the double decker tour bus. >> we were lucky. that's all we've been, lucky. >> reporter: he wanted his identity to be hidden. according to the fire protection research foundation, that in 2007 the auto industry tripled the percentage of high grade steel to 12% in cars to better protect passengers in accidents. that these photos would show the progression to 2008 to 2015. and now cars contain anywhere from 33 to more than 80%

today new york's katherine creag is in union square. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. we often see police officers right here. their patrol cars on park avenue south near 14th street. something drivers really need to be aware of. you'll see even more police officers. we want to show you video of police officers in the past on patrol. this is a big program that's part of vision zero that has started, its under way. the nypd increased the number of officers on patrol to enforce safe driving. they will look for drivers speeding, failing to yield to pedestrians. the crackdown will last through november 22nd for now. it may go longer. it's happening across the city in all five boroughs, not just local streets but highways as well. the nypd says extra officers will be working longer officers and dedicated to traffic enforcement. that happened in union square last year. it was one of those cases that drew attention to unsafe driving. we'll talk about that more in the next half hour. back to you, darlene. >> katherine creag in un
