it was different story in union square with a few cars driving around, but very few people out walking. >> and here is a look from sky 7 over san francisco. where as you can see, normally along the embarcadero it would be very busy, and it just isn't. pretty sparse out there. i noticed it comes in to work today. coming down main street, i posted a video that looked just like this. normally it would be absolutely bulsing, teeming with people. not at all. as you can see from the live pictures from sky 7, there are people out and about, but very few. perhaps 10% of the normal number of people and cars that you might see out and about at 5:00 on a tuesday afternoon. people heeding the order. now in the north bay, people in sonoma county are not affected by the shelter in place order, but they have accepted. that's going to change very soon. cornell bernard is live in santa clara. >> official says shelter in place order is eminent and could take effect as soon as tomorrow. now -- and that would join six other bay area counties now sheltering in place to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

rick leventhal reports from union square in manhattan. >> reporter: another eerily quiet night on thets of manhattan and some controversy here. the mayor dialing back on warnings about a possible shelter in place order for manhattan after the governor said it was his call and didn't think it was necessary. the mayor saying he was referring to the san francisco model where there could be some movement. in any case it is not happening, at least not yet but we are seeing new faces here including more than 200 more national guard troops stationed at the 60 ninth regiment armory a few blocks from our location near union square. they closed off or did close off of full city block with dozens of rental vans brought in where they are needed most. they will be providing logistical support, passing out meals and helping with those mobile coronavirus drive-through testing sites that have been popping up across the region. the governor ordering companies to decrease their workforce by 50% in offices where people are not working from home. the governor is coordinating with connecticut, new jersey
