we're standing on what's currently called union square which is the end cap one could say of the national mall on the east side just before you arrive at the united states capitol. it's a really fascinating piece of land because it's actually gone through many transformations in terms of what's been here over the course of the history of washington dc really since around 1800. it's important to the botanic garden because the first united states botanic garden was actually on this piece of land even though today. it's most notably associated with the capital reflecting pool and the memorial to grant and so what i'd like to do today is to present a little bit of the early history of the united states botanic garden show a couple of the remaining trees. actually that date back to the original botanic garden location and also talk about the process by which the botanic garden came to be eventually moved across the street from where it currently is and a little bit about a very very famous fountain called the bartoli fountain that originally was placed here by congress and also made its way to

repeatedly stabbed in san francisco just after 10:00 this morning on post street not far from union square. neighbors tell us the woman's name is ann and she has lived in this area, in this community, for 47 years. she was out just getting her groceries when a man passing her on the sidewalk turned and started stabbing her for no apparent reason. police say the attack appears to be unprovoked. a 35-year-old man was arrested and police believe they have the weapon used in the attack. the 94-year-old woman is expected to survive. >>> two legendary religious leaders in san francisco today with one message: love, not hate. civil rights leader jesse jackson and chinatown's leader norman fong, a director of the chinatown community center. two white men beat a chinese-american to death in 1982. at the time asians were blamed for the struggling auto industry. 40 years ago reverend jackson visited san francisco shortly after chin's death to stand with the asian community and now he's doing the same as we see a surge in anti-asian crimes almost daily. these days, the reverend is still as passionate

the man accused of stabbing her three times near union square pleaded not guilty to attempted murder charges today. we also want to warn you, some of the video you're about to see is hard to watch. cameras were not allowed in the court today as 35-year-old daniel coetch was charged with attempted murder and elder abuse. we obtained video of the attack from security cameras allegedly showing him stabbing her three times and then walking away. nbc bay area learned that he had been arrested at least five times last year and had an ankle tracker at the time of this arrest. the san francisco police officers association is also weighing in, blaming the district attorney for him being on the street at all. >> our burglary division and officers on patrol had arrested him several times. and he was known to many people. and so, yes, we did have a lot of contact and this time it paid off because he was recognized so quickly. >> this attack happened earlier this week. the poa, the police officers association, also issuing a statement blasting the d.a. for failing to hold repeat offenders account

think about trying to bring san francisco back, post pandemic, going back to what we see or saw in union square, that is the last thing we need or want. are you identifying any particular areas to make sure they don't get repopulated with more homeless people once we are really back up and running again at 100%? >> the problem exists throughout the region. what once was a san francisco problem is just as prevalent in san jose and santa clara county and in oakland as it is in san francisco. and some of the cities as well. this is a highly visible problem. it is something that is probably will get worse when funding for some of the temporary hotel rooms that we use in some places runs out. people welcome back. when the economy comes back -- it is very worrisome. this is more of a long-term play. i don't mean very long but -- if we put all of our efforts into this over the next couple of years, we can mate make a huge dent in the problem. we are concerned about the business climate in general and the homelessness visibility and the feeling of insecurity on the street in general is a really big iss
