as you know, the connections, etc., will all be affected by what happened at united airlines. er glitch the reason far ground somage. if you can see on your screen, the new york stock exchange and united were joined by the "wall street journal" as well. anyone trying to log on to wallstreetjournal.com was met by a strange white page with a bigger or are message saying "oops" on it. in the last few moments that's somewhat resolved. some people will be able to access parts of the "wall street journal," certain stories on the "wall street journal." but i'm not sure is completely resolved at this point. anyway, there is a massive fallout when a major stock exchange like the new york stock exchange can't move for now effectively one hour. our business correspondent alison kosik is standing by live. she joins me at the nyse. i know you've been talking to your sources, do we have any more information on what's happened there? >> funny you asked that. i was talking with traders. they said we're sitting here in the middle of an information vacuum wait to hear from the myself what nyse t

we're also at this very hour waiting to get more information from united airlines. ndication that these two events are connected in any way. but in the course of a few hours, this major airline, some 3500 flights impacted by what we're told was a computer or network computer problem and now on the other end of the spectrum as it relates to our financial -- finances here, the new york stock exchange, not yet ready to give us more information on what happened with this technical glitch. >> reporter: obviously it's going to be easy to speculate here tamron about what may or may not have happened. listen, things do happen. a couple of years ago there was a trading firm called night trading group out of new york city. they basically blew themselves up with a bad software installation, caused their whole systems to go haywire. all these bad trades went through and the firm went under because of that. we don't know exactly what happened here but i think your point about united and the new york stock exchange is well taken. regardless if they're connected, regardless if ther

i don't see any united airlines flights there that are actually moving. unway itself. >> let me get your perspective on this, tom. there is one shot out of lax. that may be a regional carrier, it's pretty small. how does this work when they say, yes there is a computer problem, we're getting it back on track, it seems like we're getting this fixed. how do they prioritize which flights are going to take off first? >> that is a very complicated question and answer. it's not an easy one. the united airlines dispatch center prioritizes everything. in other words they're going to take into account -- okay they've got a plane here that's a 737, for example, but they also have a 777. that 777 may be going from lax to newark and all those people need to connect because they're supposed to go on to charles de gaulle and paris. do they prioritize that flight over the 737 flight that's going from lax to seattle, for example? they might have to because how many people are going to be affected, how many connections or potential misconnections are involved here? and als

united airline is blaming a computer problem oh forcing the company to ground all of its planes this morning. lisa stark has more from washington. >> a travel nightmare for united managers. the airline had to ground all of its planes. it experienced some major computer problem. the airline called it a connectivity issue. whatever you call t it was chaos for those who were depending on flying on united airlines today. initially it effected the main line carrier and it's regional jets. the united express flights. the you needed express flights resume quite quickly but it took an hour and 15 minutes before united as able to fix its computer glitch and start resuming its flights. it will probably take hours for the airline to get its system up and running in any major fashion. in fact, the airline is saying it's waiving any change fees or cancellation fees for passengers who need to change their flights. a big mess for those flying on united. luckily the problem was resolved, the big computer issue, within an hour. >> lisa stark in washington. patrick tucker technology editor for the webs

united airlines says it was due to a technical fault at a router.hey now had -- they had a similar problem earlier this year. the stock exchange spent most of the day with the traders trying to figure out what was happening. that was down to an internal technical glitch. we do not know any more details. katty: what happens to people who were trying to make trades during the course of the day when the market reopens? will a flood of trades suddenly go through? michelle: that was part of the concern. when you have had a technical glitch with software, and you suddenly open it back up to everything, is there a danger it could crash again and be overwhelmed? we are seeing the trading opening slowly stock buy stock. you can see the prices refreshing. you have to remember that 20% of all u.s. stocks go through this building. the stock market is diverse, but you have other places where the stocks can be traded. if this place gets overwhelmed they can go to other places like the nasdaq. where they did do was they canceled all orders that had been placed. th

this is a flight from boston united airlines flight 1078, that's going to go to newark. not off the ground but the transponder is on. this is a chicago flight, from chicago to orlando. so get to the other one, go down a little bit the other way. right there. there's your dot right there. this is going to go from orlando to chicago and it is doing 250 miles per hour. that means it is off the ground. that's its air speed at the lower altitude. the faa website has the ground stop off. we'll have to see if it continues to be off. but planes are still landing. if you have loved ones in the air, there was never an issue of landing. the issue is truly now, there are too many planes on the ground probably not enough gates in some of these airports. some of the pilots may have run out of time which means they won't be able to take you on your flight. they have to get a new pilot or new flight crew. so this snowball effect that rene was talking about is now well in effect. this is going to go on for many hours to get these people back on the planes they hoped to be on even if the

that's what we found out that the united airlines network went down.we found out the new york stock exchange was affected. the new york stock exchange stopped trading at about 11:32 yesterday. and remained off line until about 3:00. causing dow to plummet 250-point, the new york stock exchange denied that problem was in anyway related to security breach of its computer systems and tweeted that the issues were caused by internal issues, prior to that united airlines had glitch in its computer system causing all flights to be grounded and resulted in delays and confusion at airports across the country. the system was back on line within few hours. then, a third outage, the wall street journal's website crashed. many fear the technical trifecta was the result after cyber attack, but the feds say it was all due to computer problems. regardless cyber security expert that we talked to says these events should make us think about safeguarding our system. >> the first suspicion, when you see three things timed together like that, is that you have concerns that
