united states. we want to welcome back our viewers in the united states and around the world. we're now learning that a former member of the united states air forcey it's believed according to accusations, he was trying to join isis. our justice correspondent pamela brown is with us. also our national security analyst peter bergen is joining us on the phone. pamela first, you've gone through the actual document, the complaint. what do we know about what's going on? >> here's what we're learning. this u.s. air force veteran allegedly tried to fly through turkey and then travel into syria to link up with isis and fight violent jihad, according to this complaint. and the suspect's name is tairod nathan webster pugh from neptune, new jersey. and what officials are saying is that he lived overseas for a period of time. he lived in egypt and kuwait and was an aviation mechanic. he worked on airplane engines and he worked for several private companies in the u.s. and overseas as well. he allegedly in january traveled from egypt to turkey where authorities stopped him before he could go any further. they returned him back to egypt. egyptian authorities d

she also served in the united states air force. ruth, thanks very much for joining us. glad to have you as well. this declaration by a medical doctor unfit to work we're now learning that they're saying in germany he was not suffering from depression. so what else could have caused a doctor let's say, to say he's unfit to work? >> first of all, we don't know if this was a psychiatrist psychologist or -- >> we only know it was a medical doctor. it could be a physical or emotionalal al-- you're a psychologist. if he's not suffering from depression -- this is hypothetical -- what potentially could he have been suffering from? >> any number of things. anxiety, ptsd it could be his being very upset, disturbed by a break-up. speaking from an emotional standpoint. but also i wouldn't rule out given the seriousness of the act that it was life-threatening or disabling medical condition that he was facing that generated a great deal of anger. >> and that he hid from his employers. >> yes. >> you've dealt with pilots. you served in the u.s. air force and have given cowensinglingun

what's unique is we have somebody who was part of the united states air force. >> he was a veteran. we've talked about this pamela brown. we've talked about teenagers. we've talked about westerners. this is the first u.s. veteran i have heard of who has been caught trying to go into syria to try to join isis. do we know anymore beyond the tampering of electronic devices and propaganda devices? do we know any more about his motivations? >> the why is always the big question. clearly this man, as feared by authority, was influenced by isis propaganda. there were beheading videos execution videos. the flames of war, the isis video, 55-minute video. it appears that he was influenced by the isis propaganda and wanted to link up with the militant group. he had done some research allegedly on different routes and how to get from turkey to syria. as i mentioned earlier t appears in the late '90s, he converted to islam and became increasingly radicalized. then according to one of his former co-workers at american airlines sympathized with osama bin laden. so clearly there's a history there a

and we train all the airborne soldiers for the entire air armed forces of the united states at four benning. if you are a navy seal, you will come here for airborne training. if you are in the para-rescue, you will come to for running to -- fort benning to be trained in the use of the parachute, how to land and that type of thing. when parachute school first started here at work running, it -- at fort benning, it was volunteers for the infantry regiment. two officers became what was known as the test and tune in the early 1940's. they would make the first combat jumps as infantry soldiers. they decided they would expand to a battalion and eventually they did and eventually it was expanded into divisions. an airborne division was posted -- supposed to be able to be deployed behind enemy lines if -- as they were at normandy and other places in order to capture , important bridges, towns road junctures and so on until they were relieved by those attacking forces coming up. o.c.s. is officer candidate school. it was established by general george kaplan marshall who was chief of staff of the arm
