five years ago the university of maryland, kid by the name of jordan mcnair, died after a practice because of heat related illness that nobody cared about and everybody told him get back out there, get back out there. you are going to be ok. he wasn't ok. he was taken off the field. hospitalized with heat stroke. they tried to give him an emergency liver transplant, didn't work. 15 days later he was dead. following an investigation it was determined there was a culture in the football program that led to this kind of tragedy. those tragedies are happening everywhere. they don't get reported the same way. those are something on the prevention side i think we have to deal with. i introduced with the help of some of you in this room the jordan mcnair act a couple months ago here in the congress that would put in place things that are really, really needed. requiring the use of external defibrillators on the field. the use of cold water immersion equipment on the field. i just can't stress enough that while name, image, and likeness are important, the health of the player also is extremely imp

this is done at the university of maryland center. i do want to warn some people it is not for the faint hearted. recipient of the pig heard, 58-year-old lauren faucet had heart disease. jacqueline howard is joining us. as i mentioned, the picture are a little graphic but this is important stuff. how is the patient doing, how does this work? >> reporter: yeah, it is definitely important, brianna. what we know is that after the surgery, the patient was breathing on his own, his heart was functioning without assistance and we know that the medical team is now monitoring him closely. and how this kind of procedure works, the pig that donated its heart was genetically modified. some pig genes were edited to help reduce the risk of the patient rejecting the organ or having a severe reaction and to control the growth of the organ and some human genes were inserted to reduce the risks as well. and this is the second time that we've seen this kind of proc procedure performed successfully. the last time was last year. the same medical team perf

he made it to america and graduated from the university of maryland with a degree in electrical engineeringorking as a systems administrator at the navy command center right here in the pentagon. he left behind a beloved wife, and their 4-year-old son. his wife who also worked for the department was devastated by her husband's death but resolved to be strong to support their son. and so 22 years later, his wife and son are incredibly close and their tie has only grown stronger from the loss they have endured. they talk every day and she is so proud of the young man that he has become. the son still tries to make his dad proud and honor his legacy in ways big and small. that can mean echoing his father's love of learning or taking up the guitar or simply staying engaged with his community. and finding ways to help others just as his dad did. so in september 2021, on the 20th anniversary of 9/11, his wife visited the memorial to place flowers on the bench with her husband's name on it. she felt a wave of sadness looking at the benchings honoring other victims that were bare. she called up a f

bell is professor of history at the university of maryland. he holds a b.a. from the university of cambridge and a ph.d. from harvard. he has won more than a dozen teaching awards including the 2017 maryland board of regents' faculty award for excellence in teaching which is the highest honor for teaching faculty in the maryland state system. in addition, he has held major research fellowships at yale, cambridge and the library of congress and is the recipient of a 2018 national endowment of the humanities public scholar awards and the 2021 andrew carnegie fellowship. he is author of the book "stolen." and this book was a finalist for the 2020 george washington prize and the 2020 harriet tubman prize. dr. bell is a trustee of the maryland center for history and culture and a fellow of the royal historical society. it is a delight to have him back with us for another program, and so without further delay, please welcome dr. richard bell. welcome, rich. guest: thank you, mary. i hope you can hear me and see me okay. i'm going to go ahead and share my screen now.
