we can open them up to even more diverse use, safe uses of our roads. and certainly our bicycle enthusiasts have a great contribution to that as i saw on grand beach and chinatown. when you close from tower to bush street and allow the people to get out there, you can see some fantastic results and we're going to patiently wait for the statistics to show us how much that impact was. but i want to simply welcome you here today and to put something in context they know will be exciting for us. you know that bicycle travel has increased over 60% since 2006. and that if we are to make sure that our goal of bicycle trips of being 20% of every trip that is in our city to be 20% by 2020, we're going to have to work a lot harder. we're going to have to educate more people. we're going to have to bring a lot more people under the tent, and we're going to have to understand how leadership and education and enforcement work together with a cultural change that we have to produce in our city. we are, not only in name, a transit-first city. we also want to make sure

for many of us, i can say us because i was there at the time, by the time. it was time for a change. people like tony boss, they started to organize the cyclists union and to establish the cyclist union, we called the national safety plan, road safety plan. and we started to introduce -- gradually, bike use went up and the danger and the fatalities decreased but not enough, so after a while we introduced the bicycle master plan, the ministry of transport introduced the national bicycle master plan to make all the local politicians and local engineers aware of the need for better infrastructure and more attention to the bicycle. that helped for a while but after 10 years, the bicycle plan was -- master plan was completed and the attention for the bicycle in-- decreased again so time for a new approach and then they introduced the bicycle council. it was a group of people, experts from all sorts of organizations, both governmental and nongovernmental, and they put together the forces to implement more information, more things to do, improve bicycle facilities

we created game pieces and asked people to use these game pieces or just right on the maps and tell us what they think about improvements to the open space as well as land use and building height and different parts of the planned area. we put the results of all of that wall data, unfiltered on the website. -- would put the result of all that raw data, unfiltered, the website. we also had approximately 100 replies on line. people give a lot of input. we have posted everything that we heard today up on the website. we have the results of the mapping games, the results of the survey, and we have compiled all of the comments into a multiple page bullet list. we tried not to filter comments, other than to compile a similar points into bullet points. there is not total consensus on every issue, but generally, the sense we got is people agreed we were heading in the right direction. this is an area that should have growth. almost no one that i recall said there should be an area reserved as light industrial. there are some different ideas about building heights, which is natural, but general

libraries, for us, is, in fact, a community center. it used to be that you could go read a book, read a newspaper, but i know libraries are a key element to any community. to some extent, it is a place where our children get to do their homework. they come and sit in that room, and do their homework, and in the course of doing their homework, they will browse around, and then they will start reading, and then they will start dreaming, and then they will start plotting against us parents.
