crossing to mike hanna, joining us from west jerusalem to tell us what is being discussed in the cabinet meeting, and to talk about how much pressure binyamin netanyahu is feeling to stop the unrest. >> well, certainly there'll be internal domestic pressure against binyamin netanyahu, likely to be voiced in the cabinet meeting from within their own government, as some of the israeli right that composes the government argues that not enough is being done to curb the waves of attacks, and they'll be pressing for stringent security measures to be taken in the days ahead, despite the fact that a raft of security measures have been introduced over the past week. that will be one of the points of discussion within the cabinet, obviously, broad ranging discussions will be held about the current crisis, ways in which to deal with it, whether or not the situation can be eased on the ground. there'll be a great deal of discussion within that. >> overnight we understand the death toll on the palestinian side has risen. >> yes, indeed. ongoing clashes have the situations continuing, where the allege

. >> we'll bring in mike now joining us from west jerusalem. >> it's a long way away from investigation, certainly into the wave of knife stabbings that have occurred in israel and occupied territory. as i mentioned there, the israeli army has carried out one preliminary investigation into the death of the 13-year-old, but it is important to note statistics provided by human rights organizations within israel, that in 94% of cases launched by the army to investigate itself, only 94% are actually thrown out. in other words, only 6% of the investigations launched by the army into its own activities actually go forward in any way. the other 94% of simply ended, the case is closed, so the question of investigation, something not really being addressed by the israeli government at this particular point. the police, as we were told and as i mentioned saying no investigation is necessary in each of these, any of these stabbing attacks because the officers on the scene did perceive an immediate threat to their safety. >> thank you for that update from west jerusalem. >> there have been more pro

. >> karl joins us from west jerusalem. karl, what has triggered today's violence and how widespread have these protests been on both sides today? >> well ali there have been lots of moving parts today. we have seen in the occupied west bank three deaths there of palestinians. two came during clashes with israeli security forces but the third death a somewhat worrying development a palestinian man disguised as a journalist approached an israeli soldier, and was shot dead. the first attempt that the palestinians have used this kind of reduce t ruse to attack thei. an incident from israeli authorities we hear that gaza militants may have opened fire on an israeli patrol. israelis then returning fire and killing two gazans, opening up a second front in this current wave of protest. here in jerusalem things have been somewhat calmer. there hasn't been any repeat of these incidents, but beefe beefp security to stem this campaign, but young muslim men were forced to pray on the pavement at the gate of the old city and that is onc

crossing over to mike hannah, who is joining us from west jerusalem to tell us more about the stabbings that took place near the gates, mike? >> well, the police have released more details of the second stabbing in which three police officers were attacked by a 19-year-old palestinian. now, initial reports said that two of the police officers had been moderately injured, but the third was in serious condition. the police now say that the man in a serious condition was shot by what they call friendly fire. that is a shot fired by one of the other police officers while the assailant was being gunned down. a second police officers, the one who was moderately injured was also struck, apparently, by friendly fire. now earlier in the day there was an attack very near the same site. that was two elderly israelis who were moderately knifed by a palestinian. the palestinian then shot down by police. so two attacks on the same site in the course of the day. >> mike, how much pressure is all of this putting on both parties, netanyahu, as well as the palestinian authority macmad abba mahmood abbas.

. >> andrew simmons joins us from west jerusalem to tell us what else israeli's prime minister said in that session of parliament. >> well, he was hard-hitting in the situation. he said that the legislation which is already in place in emergency law right now will be made into law. there are two readings taking place and it's likely to be actually on the statute book next week. what we're seeing is a raft of new measures particularly the most controversial, the one in which there are harsher sentences for under 18-year-olds and also a double effective really, because the under 18-year-olds for rock throwing or hurling any other object will not only get a term in a detention center, but their parents will be fined. there are going to be minimal sentences of around three years jail for the duties in throwing missiles at police, and also a raft of other measures in the way palestinians are handled for these sort of offenses, and furthermore, he is basically saying that no more of this, there cannot be any, any like terms used anymore. the irony here is that the attorney general had actual

mike hanna joins us from west jerusalem. we also go to the occupied west bank.oda abdel-hamid, the latest incident took place where the palestinian boy was shot. >> yes, indeed, it took place in this part of the checkpoint. which is the pedestrian terminal. they have to go flow several gates. he was on his way into ramallah, and then overnight was tense. you this jewish settlers attack the house of the young men that were shot dead in the morning. there are two sides of the stories, and you have for example between the settlers and the palestinians. and under the security responsibility of the palestinian authority - that tension is continuing today. we do know about some confrontations going on now, that is after some students called for a demonstration of those we have seen over the past nearly three weeks. each time there's a demonstration it turns into devastation. there are clashes in the north, and now the worry for palestinians is that with the amount of settlement that exists both in the occupied west bang and east jerusalem, with the amount of expansion

let's go to our correspondent, mike hanna joining us live from west jerusalem. good morning, mike.hat is the situation there this morning? >> reporter: well, at the moment, there is an area, atmosphere of uneasy calm. one might put it like that. east jerusalem, itself, is very, very tension. there is a huge amount of police presence in the area, no neighborhoods have been sealed off as yet. however, once again, extremely tense situation. now, the most significant of these new measures announced is deployment into israeli cities. this is virtually unprecedented measure putting the army alongside the police in the cities and in what are termed sensitive areas. the exact phrasing of the closedush of certain east jerusalem suburbs is important. it says the israel police is authorized to impose a closure to surround septembers of friction in accordance with security considerations. basically, they have given themselves the authority to be able to seal off specific neighborhoods of east jerusalem. this, in itself, is going to be a point of major friction in the days ahead. >> well, how w

. >>> well, deborah hyams is with amnesty internation and joins us live from west jerusalem. k you for joining us here on al jazeera. now the group human rights watch, who one of their investigators was shot in the past week, they accused israel of violating international law which governs the youth -- use of eatal -- lethal force. would you agree? would your organization agree with human rights watch? >> yes. we would. definitely we have also identified this was a crackdown and particularly the use of excessive and lethal force by the israeli military and police throughout the occupied west bank, including in east jerusalem. we have seen very, very high numbers of hundreds of people injured by live ammunition, or rubber coated metal bullets. we have seen a string of killings, many of them look like they have been unlawful, where forced -- you know, lethal force should not have been used. so we definitely agree that the response -- the israeli response to be a demonstration violating international law. >> according to international law, the lethal force can only be used to pro

let's cross over to mike hannah who is joining us from west jerusalem. you're going to tell us the latest about two stabbings that took place near the damascus gates. >>reporter: indeed both in occupied east jerusalem, both at roughly the same site. in the first attack, two elderly israelis were likely injured by an attacker. the attacker shot immediately on the scene. and then in the second attack, three police officers were stabbed. however, the third police officer critically wounded, we are told, was, in fact, shot by the fire of his colleagues as they shot and killed the attacker. so two separate attacks basically at the same scene in occupied east jerusalem. there have also been demonstrations and clashes in the refugee camp during a funeral there for a protester shot in the course of demonstrations yesterday. that protester was shot and killed by an israeli sniper. >> mike i suppose it's important to discuss why there's been a string of stabbings and shootings, why now? >>reporter: once again, the stabbings are a bit different from what we see in

mike hanna joins us from west jerusalem. , that statement coming after a security cabinet meeting. what are we hearing on the political front there in jerusalem? >> reporter: well, at this stage no details have emerged from that security cabinet meeting. benjamin netenyahu has been consulting his heads of police, army, and intelligence services in terms of exploring ways in which the situation on the ground can be dealt with. in recent days there has been massive increase in the number of policemen deployed. large number of civilian officers have been called up to police duty bolstering the number of forces on the ground throughout the day. we have seen a massive increase in security in occupied east jerusalem, a number of people being stopped and searched by police. all of this follows a day of violence, yet another in the series of ongoing attacks. horror among morning commuters on their way to work. israeli police say two palestinians boarded this bus. at least one was armed with a weapon and opened fire. paramedics say is

mike hanna joins us from west jerusalem. we also go to the occupied west bank. tell us, hoda abdel-hamid, what the sense is there among the palestinians. >> in the occupied west bang you have a sense that tensions are increasing since the wave of stabbing came on this side. it started in nablus a few days ago, and here, behind me in the pedestrian terminal of the checkpoint a young palestinians, ordering to the israelis, tried to stab an israeli border guard and a bomb expert searched him, while witnesses in the terminal say the young boy was not doing anything, just walking behind the israeli soldiers when the soldiers maybe panicked or suspected him and turned around and shot him. there has been a lot of tension in nablus and hebron between the jewish settlers and palestinians. in hebron, maybe they were the most intensifying between jewish settlers who went to the house of the young man who was shot yesterday morning. you said earlier that there was two sides to the story in that. while they threw a petrol bomb at the house, and in nablus you had the same thi

us now from bethlehem. security has been ramped up in recent days with israeli forces on high alert after friday prayers. let's now speak to andrew simmons who joins us live from west jerusalem. andrew as we were saying, outbreaks of violence have continued across the west bank, in jerusalem, and of course at the border with gaza as well. >> yes, after a week of intense violence, these stabbings and shootings of attackers and also mutual fear across the divide, we have what is described by hamas as a day of rage. and it would appear that some of the worst violence has indeed been in gaza, where these two -- possibly three people ve been killed from what we're hearing, and at least 60 injuries, some ofhe seriously. they appear -- the demonstrators to have tried in several areas near the main crossing point, to try and get across the border into israel. they went into the buffer zone, israeli soldiers opened fire as soon as they got close to the border area, and as a result we have all of those casualties. in the occupied west bank in hebron, a man described as a journalist, a palestinian approached a soldier and stabbed him according to the police. he has a t-shirt emblazoned

andrew joins us live from west jerusalem. you have more information i understand? >>reporter: yes. some more information. and some conflicting information as well. this has been quite a confusing situation in terms of information coming from the scene and from the police as well. the sixth person was said originally to have been a civilian but now it has been confirmed that it was in fact an israeli soldier who was actually hit. either hit by gunshot or stabbed. he has died we're told and that is now confirmed. and as far as the two people . one is dead of arabic appearance and another is of arafraem appearance. there's no evidence these two men are the suspects, so it's really quite confusing. was there a mistake made about the police opening fire or not? not clear. >> right. as you say, andrew, we have to be -- it's a little bit of a confusing picture. we have to be very careful about drawing conclusions at this point about exactly what transpired and who might have been behind the attacks. this comes of course as israel is implementing security measures across the occupied terri

west jerusalem. >> we are joined now live via skype from the city of hebron in the occupied west bank. he's a palestinian human rights activist. good to have you with us. you, too have been attacked as you were walking along a street. that was quite recently. he will us what happened. june the settlers from two weeks are attacking the palestinian homes in hebron, well protected by the israeli soldiers. hebron they don't have any protection to direct themselves or to protect their families. today i was passing in the street. soldier stopped me, then settlers, israeli settlers claimed that i had a knife, and i almost -- they almost shot me today. then one of the settlers got close to me, kicked me and i was detained for maybe one hour and i was forced not to walk on that street at all today and detained in one of the palestinian houses. this is what happened today with me and with many other palestinians who are really suffering from the israeli soldiers and from the israeli settlers who are very violent these days. >> it must have been a frightening experience, but the israeli government says that the palestinians have caused this situation because the

west jerusalem. thanks very much. abdul joins us live from ramallah in the west bank. we were just speaking there about the lack of organization, the lack of coordination behind the violence that we've seen across parts of the west bank. is that consistent with what you witnessed today and what you've been hearing from some of the people that you've been speaking to who are out in protest? >> well, it's quite different in the sense that this is an unrest that is led by the youth. universities play a huge role. usually when they call for demonstrations, you would see a much bigger turnout than if the political factions do, just like what happened today. today was supposed to be a day of rage. except for bethlehem, there was unrest as every where else. tomorrow on saturday universities call for demonstrations, and that will be very indicative of about how much stamina does this unrest has and how much appeal it's having among the youth who go there. it is certainly the p.a. will not be able to control this, because the anger of these youth is not only towards israel and

us from east jerusalem where friday prayers have been taking operation. let's talk about the latest bouts of violence. what more do we know? >> i'm actually in west jerusalem, but in the last two hours, the first i want that's taken place in jerusalem in the last two weeks, it's been relatively quiet here. these i wants have all been happening in the occupied west bank, the israeli place say that a 23-year-old from occupied east jerusalem behind the separation wall so technically in the west bank, an area that has a no municipality access, very difficult conditions there, they say that he stabbed a student. that student is in moderate condition, and he was shot. what is interesting, we spoke to one of my colleagues, a journalist who witnessed the latter part of the scene. he saw a young man lying on the ground and he was shot seven or eight times with live ammunition. he is in critical condition, we're being told, but again, it highlights the unpredictability, the nature of these kind of incident the. it's been relatively quiet because the israeli forces have clamped down on east jerusalem. there are neighborhoods where alleged attackers have com

jerusalem with people incredibly unhappy about the situation. >> thanks very much. >>> hoda abdel hamid joins us live now from ramallah in the west bank.oda we have seen an escalation in the west bank, part of that area seeing violent protests. did it turn out to be the day of rage that was called for that people wanted? >> reporter: not quite. it was a day of rage that was called upon by the political factions here, giving it up to every area then to organize their own protests. and as we have seen in the past, each time the political factions sort of interfere openly, then you have a lesser turnout. nonetheless there was fierce clashes in bethlehem, things have been tense there for a few days. earlier -- at the end of last week, there was a 13-year-old boy who died in clashes there, and then two days ago a 27-year-old young man was also killed during the confrontation there, so it's a very charged atmosphere. uls where there were protests that turned violent. the israeli soldiers immediately sort of fired tear gas to keep the protester as far as possible, so that was also one of the factors while the clashes were not able to come abo
