us here. you look at us up here, lots of people of color. unfortunately when you look at our universities and colleges, they do not have all the people of color. it is great to see an audience of people that look like us. it was about time, right? and i do not know about you, but that is what it is all about. not about us being successful. all of us already made it. it is about how we get everybody in this city and community to rally behind the young people like yourself who have a whole future ahead of you, and we have screwed up the plan of for you really bad. you guys are going to have to be 10 times smarter than us because we did not figure it out. it is exciting to be in a place where you folks are going to be in the future and to have the gates foundation stepped up and give you some of the tools. one of the frustrating things for me as a superintendent is i kind of believe we are educating all you young people for a world that just does not exist anymore. things have changed so much. when i was in school, there was not computers. thin

more than any of us standing up here today. i was reading the newspaper this morning, and there was an article in the paper. i said, that is my chance for a soapbox. so i will speak for two minutes, starting now. it was an article about church street -- turk street. there is a tndc project there on the corner. i want to make sure i get this right. the author who wrote this column misses the point, as he often does. it misses the point in a number of ways. 178 affordable units, services on site. probably the bright spot on that block. if tndc had more money, the entire bloc would be in good shape. this is a fantastic project. it is also adjacent to two other large projects. there is the ambassador. so the author of that article misses that and talks about the liquor store on the corner and more police presence. granted, those are problems, but getting rid of a liquor store and having more police does not solve a problem of poverty, lack of opportunity, lack of housing. it does not solve the problem for the need of human services

that political ploy has been used up here most of my lifetime. they're going to accuse their opponents of taking it away. that's just the way it works up here, and that's not good policy. but the bottom line is, some things will be changed. we will be to the point where, because we have been running this government now historically for quite a few years, by barring money to spend on projects we approve, and that barring is about -- what is it, about 40% now of everything which we have up here, and so we reached the point where we spend our revenues and we have to have money to fin, a project. so one of the things that has to be faced is the debt service and the bond and the debt of our country ait comes due. i' been told, i don't know this for a fact, that we're going to have to rework quite a few hundreds of billions of doars worth of bonds in the month of august, which would be abou $500 billion worth of extra spending or extra funds we would have to put out. and the issue, the real issue is everybody pretty much agrees if we don't extend the de
