joining us right now is usc associate professor of communications, stacey smith.inclusion fiinitiative. so good to see you. what surprises you the most about these latest findings? >> i think there are two big surprises, fredicka. first, we looked at the 95-year history. when we look across all the years, it's absolutely staggering just how exclusionary this institution has been over time. only 17% of all nominees have been wrim in the categories we evaluated. drops to 12% when you take out acting categories. 6% people of color. 2% of nominees -- less than 2% actually women of color. so when we saw those findings, it was really important to look at how are things going more vently. i -- recently. when you see 16 out of 19% a 5% or greater difference in the percentage of people of color nominated at the academy awards, that's cause for celebration. things are moving, albeit slowly, in the right direction. >> while all people perhaps didn't know it in numbers, they were very much aware of the disparities. it was pretty obvious, right? so far how is this study being
