we can take a look at the did you feel it map from the usgs.an see that most of the bay area did report feeling this relatively weak earthquake but also reporting that the shaking was low on the overall scale. now, this occurred pretty much directly on the san andreas fault. that is running right up the peninsula, and so it's not a surprise we would get an earthquake here. relatively small size, the quake, hopefully it's one of those situations where it's releasing a little bit of tension and helping avoid something larger farther down the line. the other story we're tracking, turning to the world of meteorology instead of seismology, a red flag warning tomorrow through 5:00 p.m. sunday. offshore winds very dry producing relative humidity levels down to about 10%. elevating the fire threat as we head through the weekend. we also have a wind advisory that goes into effect tomorrow for many of the same locations. be prepared for the possibility of downed branches if not entire trees and the possibility of power outages, and of course, power lines

we are getting the early look at the usgs did you feel it map. we will switch to that and zoom out for a wider perspective. this is going to change as they filter through the reports that are coming in. i just posted mine because that is what you are supposed to do. let them know what you did feel and the magnitude of the shaking. the reports coming in from up and down the peninsula across the golden gate into the east bay as well. mostly confined to the west of the oakland hills, but, even around walnut creek a few people reporting it. into the valley as well. some reports of at least light shaking, i would call it somewhere in between light and moderate shaking here in the financial district of downtown san francisco. so, certainly something to get your attention, the quake happened at 6:38 p.m. we had the cameras rolling on me recording segments we will show you the footage later in the newscast. we are also going to be tracking an elevated wildfire threat as we head into the weekend. i will be back to talk about that in just a few minutes >>

joining us now is robert degroot from the usgs. robert handles the team that handles that shake alert app. i think we have you. how does the shake alert work in terms of the discrepancy and location and the messaging? >> yeah, so we rely on information from the field to basically determine what the size of the earthquake is. so for this particular earthquake we relied on about one second of data from the earthquake that was then processed and then handed over to companies that deliver alerts on the usgs's behalf. so, yes, the estimate was very high. and we really aimed to get these numbers as close as possible. but it turns out that this particular earthquake, the sensors that were picking it up were very close to the earthquake, and it actually appeared to be a much bigger event initially in the first few seconds than we expected. so it was many minutes later that the event was lowered to magnitude 4.2. >> and i saw all the reports a few minutes later. initially 5.7. then lowered to 4.2 ultimately. this alert went out to a lot of
