the usgs put out a statement on social media stating some people in california might have gotten a test message. they said they are working with the shake alert technical partner to figure out what happened. most likely was due to a mixup between time zones and their alert system. >>> so many people have received earthquake alerts over the past 24 hours and yesterday a few areas throughout the bay reported feeling the quake. many more folks definitely got the alert. it was widespread enough that bart trains initiated a systemwide shutdown for a small time and 1x user posted this is not the alert you want to get when riding bart. it's it was scarier than the quake itself. we were in a meeting yesterday and we got the alert but did not feel it. shake alert with tentative with usgs tells us it is expected that people who were not in close proximity to the earthquake , they still received the alert. the question now is, did the alert system work how it was intended to yesterday? >> yes. the shake alert system performed as expected today. one thing that is important to know is , we need to m

we can take a look at the did you feel it map from the usgs.an see that most of the bay area did report feeling this relatively weak earthquake but also reporting that the shaking was low on the overall scale. now, this occurred pretty much directly on the san andreas fault. that is running right up the peninsula, and so it's not a surprise we would get an earthquake here. relatively small size, the quake, hopefully it's one of those situations where it's releasing a little bit of tension and helping avoid something larger farther down the line. the other story we're tracking, turning to the world of meteorology instead of seismology, a red flag warning tomorrow through 5:00 p.m. sunday. offshore winds very dry producing relative humidity levels down to about 10%. elevating the fire threat as we head through the weekend. we also have a wind advisory that goes into effect tomorrow for many of the same locations. be prepared for the possibility of downed branches if not entire trees and the possibility of power outages, and of course, power lines

we are getting the early look at the usgs did you feel it map. we will switch to that and zoom out for a wider perspective. this is going to change as they filter through the reports that are coming in. i just posted mine because that is what you are supposed to do. let them know what you did feel and the magnitude of the shaking. the reports coming in from up and down the peninsula across the golden gate into the east bay as well. mostly confined to the west of the oakland hills, but, even around walnut creek a few people reporting it. into the valley as well. some reports of at least light shaking, i would call it somewhere in between light and moderate shaking here in the financial district of downtown san francisco. so, certainly something to get your attention, the quake happened at 6:38 p.m. we had the cameras rolling on me recording segments we will show you the footage later in the newscast. we are also going to be tracking an elevated wildfire threat as we head into the weekend. i will be back to talk about that in just a few minutes >>

the usgs website said people in san francisco, san jose, and santa rosa felt that shaking. >> you can always log in and say whether or not you felt it. nbc bay area's bob redell is in brentwood this morning. bob, what are folks saying to you? >> reporter: a lot of people, a lot of the people we spoke with did feel it. i happened to be in liver more at the time in my car when i got the alert. my wife immediately called me. she was also in livermore at the time at home, and we were expecting to feel a shaking if the alert was going to be ten second or whatever. we didn't feel anything. in brentwood, a number of people we spoke with did feel some shaking. these were all people who have been in the state for a long time, the state of california, who have felt other quakes before. this is what they had to say. >> oh, i thought i was dizzy. >> reporter: you were standing up many. >> i was. >> reporter: and what did you feel? >> just like a swing. but i've been through big ones. >> reporter: so, this didn't compare. >> no. >> reporter: we, again, are in brentwood, which is about a 20-minute

joining us now is robert degroot from the usgs. robert handles the team that handles that shake alert app. i think we have you. how does the shake alert work in terms of the discrepancy and location and the messaging? >> yeah, so we rely on information from the field to basically determine what the size of the earthquake is. so for this particular earthquake we relied on about one second of data from the earthquake that was then processed and then handed over to companies that deliver alerts on the usgs's behalf. so, yes, the estimate was very high. and we really aimed to get these numbers as close as possible. but it turns out that this particular earthquake, the sensors that were picking it up were very close to the earthquake, and it actually appeared to be a much bigger event initially in the first few seconds than we expected. so it was many minutes later that the event was lowered to magnitude 4.2. >> and i saw all the reports a few minutes later. initially 5.7. then lowered to 4.2 ultimately. this alert went out to a lot of

the usgs says that one was a 3.7 magnitude quake centered nr millbrae. sfo says it has inspected its runws and not found any damage. so far, no injuries have been reported. people all around the bay area say they felt that first quake was books. everyone stopped talking and everyone had that same like, oh, is that what i think it is? and then you had that moment where you're like, is it going to stop? but yeah, so then and then it passed and then everyone. so people were excited. so people were like like, oh, that's my first one. but yeah, no, people. people were freaked out for like for like one and a second that was like a moment of panic. many social media users posted, they did not receive a shake alert on their device, as the usgs says. that's because the quake was below magnitude 4.5. here is a live look tonight of beautiful san francisco all lit up and the bay bridge as well here in the foreground. fall is in full effect as temperatures right now are in the low 50s. meteorologist mark tamayo joining us now with what we can expect from the weather

the usgs says that the shake alert app works with very little information in the first few seconds of a quake. it's meant to really give you a chance to prepare and try to stay safe. so we'll talk about that and get a closer look at the map as exactly where that quake was. we all got that alert. i was like, was >> yeah, i know we all got that alert. it is a moment where you definitely look at your phone to thankfully not hearing if there are any problems of injuries with news. but yeah, 4.1. it was -- 9.29. this morning. you can see the location here. >> so it is to the east of antioch. that gives you a little bit of a reference, but it's also just about miles south-southwest of i'll 10 and the depth on this one was about 6.7 miles. so this was the did you feel it map that the usgs puts out that people can get online and say where they felt this was the center. but you can see as these kind of blue lines lead out where it was felt it was felt in walnut creek. it was felt in fairfield. it was fell down in livermore. so a lot of it was east bay. i did not feel it here in san francisco a

this is website from the usgs where you can go on and it's the did you feel it right? you can see the center of it right there. but then you can see as we kind of move out where people did feel it. and it was felt in fairfield, it was felt in spots like walnut creek. it was felt down in livermore. so certainly the east bay was definitely aware that this was happening. now, if we look at kind of the strength of this, this was a 4.1 that is considered a light quake. now, that does mean you have noticeable shaking. there are about 10,000 of these per year. you can see as these go up in magnitude. obviously it decreases exponentially, really. and it is the equivalent of about 33,000 pounds of an explosive. so obviously, if you did feel it, you felt it for good reason. meanwhile, back in the bay, it's been all about the sunshine and the warmer temperatures today as we take a live look from the east bay, it's just been blue skies wall to wall all day today. temperatures right now sitting in the low 80's in san francisco and some of the gauges there that are more inland san f
