this is in southwestern utah. eight people confirmed dead and many of them are women and their children. we're told that they were watching the floods when this wall of water came out of nowhere. it washed away two cars that had 16 people inside. also right now in northern california, raging wildfires continuing to burn out of control. these fast-moving flames, they are leaving a path of death and destruction. they are ripping through neighborhoods, entire towns. the aggressive valley fire north of san francisco valley is one of the most aggressive fires ever to hit the state. it's racing through america's wine country. it's charred now more than 60,000 acres. residents forced to evacuate their homes and cars that are engulfed in flames. an elderly disabled woman has died. she was actually trapped in her burning home. many others are still missing. hundreds of buildings have burned to the ground. more than 11,000 firefighters are battling these flames. >>> 4:34 now. time for weather/traffic on the 4s. some of the

this is the border of arizona and utah. this is hilldale utah.ountains just to the north and just to the east. and this canyon here is called water canyon. that is very prone to flash flooding. everything that falls in these mountains can quickly rush down and go right through hilldale into colorado city. in the trajectory, the path this took, it was the worst case scenario. it went to the south and they said it on rained 20 to 30 minutes in the city and it went right up the canyon into the mountains and all of that water collects and funnels down and rushes down. that's what they dealt with. 4:00, 5:00 in the afternoon when the roads are the most crowded. it's a small city, around 3,000 people. it's a horrible tragedy. that's like a once in a 100-year event for that area. we do have heavy rain in los angeles. this is good. cooler in the west, chances for showers, even areas near that valley fire had rain yesterday that was much needed. this is great news for firefighters to try to get a grip on was is a very busy fire season. i had our staff put

floods ravaging parts of utah. storm team 4 meteorologist tom kierein updating his forecast for summer-like temperatures. >>> first to wendy in the newsroom with new information about a deadly school bus accident in texas. >> well, pat, we have learned from our afill where fiffiliate the driver who hit that bus is a teacher and that woman told police she thought another driver was coming into her lane during rush hour this morning so she swerved and hit the school bus. the bus driver then swerved or tried to. he ran through a guardrail and then plunged from that overpass. two students on board, a 14 and a 17-year-old, both killed. witnesses say they tried to help but there was little that they could do. >> it was about seven, eight people ran over to try to help whoever's on the bus, but the way the bus hit, everybody was pinned in it. >> two other students and a bth bus driver were seriously hurt but expected to recover. the bus does have seat belts. we don't know yet if the students with wearing them or if day wo

we've got arizona, california, utah. there's the baja peninsula.hading of orange and red and purple, those are the top two thunderstorms, paula. they're going to be responsible for the moisture that's eventually going to overspread the southwestern united states. if you recall, we've been discussing this four-year drought that's ongoing over the western u.s. that means that the ground is extremely hard. any time we get rain falling at a rate of 1 inch per hour, we see that water pool up on the hard surface from the drought and water culminates into the rivers and canyons and causes flash flooding just like we saw in utah earlier this week. that unfortunately, led to 20 fatalities in use at that and arizona. low pressure system moves into southern california. it will bring much-needed ryne fall but a little too much too quickly. heavy rain, especially east of the low pressure system. again, this is the destructive power of flash flooding taking anything in its path. but just to put it in perspective for you, we have these slow moving thunderstorms a

we do want to start with breaking news from the utah/arizona border. at least eight people are dead and another five missing following severe flash flooding last night. intense rain triggered what emergency services called a wall of water and debris. enough to sweep away two vehicles. 16 people were washed downstream. authorities say several children and mothers were among the dead or missing. we do know at this hour that three people did survive. but the search has been scaled back due to safety concerns. emergency crews will return to full-scale efforts in a matter of hours. and of course we will update you on that information as becomes available to us. >>> also breaking news overnight, the police say the suspect at the center of yesterday's campus shooting in mississippi is now dead. shannon lamb was a professor at delta state university. police had been looking for him all day after another professor was found fatally shot in his office. on top of that lamb was also being sought in connection with another deadly shooting 300 miles away. the woman
